Noisy belt and pulleys

Hi all. Driving back home the other day in my Z and as I pulled up I heard a chirping squeaky noise coming from under the bonnet. I opened it and found two knackered pulleys. One is a slave pulley and the other is attached to the tensioner. I stopped the engine and inspected the belt as well only to find some small cracks developing. It is clear that my belt and pulleys will need replacing however my car has done 80k miles and I am surprised that they have failed at this mileage. my car is a 2003 2.5i auto. Has anyone on here replaced the belt before and pulleys before and if so at what cost. I am going to my local indy in a week and until then I am not driving. Does anyone know what the cost of the work could be? Is it common on the Z4 at this mileage?

Hi Pascal

I had my alternator replaced, and had the belt and pulley replaced at the same time as preventive maintenance. The n52 engine in mine doesn't have an idler pulley, so I didn't have that cost. Parts from dealer cost about £35 for the belt, and £80 odd for the pulley and tensioner kit. I wouldn't think the idler pulley would be too much more.

I hear they can fail anywhere from 50000 to over 100000 miles, from n52 engines across the BMW lineup. I wouldn't say that yours have failed particularly early.
