Noise start up

Hi,

When I start my E85 3,0i (2003), it gives a terrible noise at the same second as the engine fires up.

It is like a lose-belt-noise I believe.
Just a whine and then normal.
Only at cold start - the car is always parked inside in minimum 16 degrees Celsius.

Any ideas?!

Starter motor solenoid sticking.

But it always starts perfectly?

Yep, the solenoid engages ok but then gets stuck and doesn’t retract properly.

It’s worth checking the auxiliary belt for bad wear / cracking also as the belt is much harder to turn right after starting the car because the alternator is under high load.

But the belt is tensioned automatically so not much can go wrong there unless the tensioner fails.

I think this is the same sound as I get, if I release the key just a fraction of a second quicker it doesn't make the noise

Exactly.
But it is not normal like that..

Starter motor for sure. Mine did that for a while (certainly a few months of daily driving) but the starter motor eventually became unreliable. I almost got stuck at work (and no one wants to get stuck there!).
Starter motor replaced, no funny noise and no getting stuck anywhere :-)

I have this exact same noise on starting of my 2004 3.0i. I have checked the belt and nothing amiss there. Its likely to be starter motor issue that you guys are mentioning. Is there a way of fixing/cleaning up the solenoid if I remove the starter motor? I'd rather not have to replace the whole unit.

Yep, can be cleaned and re-greased no problem.
