Noise on start up

Recently I've noticed that when I start the car from cold it makes a sort of crackling noise (although it sounds more mechanical rather than electrical). It goes within 10-12 seconds but am a little concerned as to what it is. It's quite a hard noise to describe.

Is it before oil gets on the move? Just wondered whether there was a particular trait or characteristic...

As always, any help gratefully received.

Thanks

Dan

TBH i don't think i ever heard anyone describe a noise a crackling before on a car. Perhaps a video would help?

It may be as you say that the oil isn't quite circulating until up to temp, but without hearing it or knowing where the noise comes from is hard to tell.

A video could help. Sometimes crackling to you could be described as an entirely different noise to somebody else hence: the answer you need.

Hmm.... good point.

I was trying to think about how else to describe it.
Perhaps if I video it and then see if anyone can tell from the sound.

When it's warm it's ok and doesn't do it... just seems odd that it's started now.

Like I said, a video will be a great start. Maybe an inside of the car video and get out of the car while its making the noise, the sound could sound different inside and outside.

My e85 2.5, pre facelift has a funny noise on cold starts as well...Sounds like a heat panel vibrating, disappears seconds after the engine is running.

It could be described as a metalic crackle.

Checked all of my heat shield's and everything is tight...no idea and its never changed or gotten worse so just decided its one of those things!

Think you're closest so far scotty597. That's the sort of noise.
I recorded it this morning but think it's better with a video.

It lasts for perhaps 5-6 seconds and then is gone.

Disa valve common problem, it only gets worse, new one from Germany £120 or get a used one and put the disa valve upgrade. make sure you get one thats got a pronounced lip on the angle side other wise they don't seal right

These are the two videos I've got of the noise.

It's not great and you have to have the volume quite loud but hopefully the bat eared amongst us might have a clue....

Thanks

If it mainly happens on cold start, usually after several days standing, and disappears within a few seconds then the chances are that it's lack of oil pressure on the cams/tappets. I'm told it's nothing to get worried about.

I don't think that's a top end issue. I don't think it's a starter noise either. I had the starter bendix fail on my old Z and it made a whirring noise, like that starter was spinning too fast with the engine (engaged too long). I've never heard a starter make a clunky sound like that. Although it's like possible if the teeth are broken on the starter or the flywheel (uncommon).

It's hard to tell from a video, but it sounds to me like it's coming from the bottom end - like something is hitting something when the engine is cranked. Almost like a torque converter bolt(s?) are loose (automatic?)... I've seen torque converter bolts make a noise like that.

I would try to isolate it by disabling the fuel pump and having someone crank it a few times. Listen to the starter, transmission, items driven by pulleys, oil pan, etc... with a mechanic's stethoscope (cheap).

Yes, I agree. Having heard the Youtube clip, it's clearly neither starter motor binding nor top-end tappet/cam noise. Worth looking at the heat shield on the right of the engine - some people have complained of noise caused by binding/rubbing of that.

Just be grateful it isn't as bad as mine was. I had mine much louder and almost constant :headbang:

I would have preferred your problem over mine

Thanks guys.

Might have it booked in with my mechanic then, see if he can find something. I'm not skilled enough to know where it could be coming from and it's hard to start the car and listen with the bonnet open.

Will check the heat shield though...although it doesnt sound like that.

I've never known a car with so many annoying niggles as this one! I had a Grande Punto Sporting before this for 2 years that never made noise, creaked or squeeked at all.
