Noise in the cabin

Hi all, newbie here, so be gentle....

I had a test drive of a 2011 3.0 auto yesterday. It was a low mileage (25k) car that had been spun, hit the kerb and had bent the suspension etc and had been a cat n writeoff. I saw the salvage pictures and it looked an easy fix. The seller told me new arms, new sub-frame, one drive shaft, quarter panel and paint. I didn't get much of a look underneath, but the panel fit and paint quality was a bit disappointing. Rest of the car was lovely.

I was surprised how much pannel rubbing noise there was on the road. It was on 18" run flats that wouldn't help, but as I've never been in an e89 before, I am not sure if this is normal? I used to have an e93 and there was zero noise like that.

I passed on the purchase, my spider senses tingling.... if the workmanship on the visible stuff was not perfect, what would the hidden work be like.... might be absolutely fine, and at 30% discount on a non CatN car may have been a bargain. The panel rubbing noise being the deal breaker.

Any thoughts? Do rubbers get noisy with age? Gummy Pfledge on the seals a thing you guys do?

Best avoided given the severity of the impact...not sure what panel rubbing noise is FWIW

That presumably means the one I looked at was atypical.
The noise I am talking about is like rubber on metal moving back and forth. Not a squeak, more of a groan.... My 4 door M140 had that from the door seals - it was a common complaint largely fixed by using a cleaning solution known as Gummy Pfledge which is meant to recondition rubber.

E89 cabins can be pretty noisy with lots of undamped noise coming through from A pillars, sun visors, dash rattles, roof rattles, tyre noise from the rears etc..but..that sounds a weird one..

OP, welcome on board.

When driving at different speeds and different tarmacs, any vibration, shudder, pulling, etc ?

Hard to say, it was only a few urban miles of a test drive. Sounds like I did the correct thing by not buying. Had you all come back and said "Perfectly normal, they are all like that" I would be having second thoughts.

It could have been the roof being slightly 'out of shape' to the body if it has had a whack. E89s do tend to 'squeak' and 'rattle' around where the (miles) of rubber gaskets meet the body, but not excessively so IME.
Our current one seems to rattle or squeak from a different place depending on the day of the week. :D
If there was a misalignment of even a couple of mm then the squeaks could be worse and well worth avoiding the car IMO. The last thing an E89 needs is a roof that doesn't fit quite right!

Oh, so sorry, I’ve misread the OP. I thought you had bought it.

The E89 cabin is very noisy. Mine creeks, clicks and clacks from everywhere. It pays to have a good stereo. But ditch The Boss. That’s for old men. :fuelfire:
