Noise from steering column

Bit of an odd one- I let my friend drive my Z4M earlier (as he has a 3.0 coupe so was interested in the difference) and he adjusted the steering wheel. Later I was driving it and noticed a noise at low speed maneuvers- like the actual steering column was catching on something but it only seems to happen when the steering wheel is on its lowest setting, I moved it back up a touch and no noise.

The noise sounds pretty severe- not loud but definitely mechanical and you can feel it through the wheel. Anyone come across this before?
 
Yeah, not sure if I had the wheel on its lowest setting before- I thought I did but perhaps it was a touch higher.

With the bonnet up you could hear a kind of graunching noise quite clearly and it didn't sound good...

It's under warranty but just wondered if anyone had come across similar.
 
I had this and it was driving me mad. Check the steering rack where the knuckle joint bit is and I bet it's hitting off the headshield at the back of the engine. Hope that fixes it for you :thumbsup:
 
Thanks for the pointers- I'll take it up with the dealer.

Re his opinions on the M over the 3.0- it was only a short drive but he found the ride quality surprisingly good, the front end a bit more positive on turn in, the throttle mapping to be more aggressive without any dead-feeling (although I advised him on the throttle-map reset) as well as obviously a decent chunk faster with a much more noticeable engine note (although I have bypass pipes). To be fair it's not really the weather at the moment to really get a decent feel for quite how different it is as it's fairly consistently greasy and cold out but I think he was suitably impressed.

All that said, another friend had a 3.0 coupe a few years back and he can really hustle a car along and I wouldn't see what way he went even with M-Power at my disposal so it's not all about having the fastest toy on paper!
