Noise from rear driver's side

Hi all,
Anyone had a noise from the driver's side rear wheel when on the move (can be heard above about 30 mph) - sounds a bit like the noise that something rubbing against the tread of the tyre would make - like a metallic mosquito buzz. Have just purchased the car and need to get this sorted with the dealer - any ideas?

I'm not an expert, bit it sounds like you have got a broken spring, search in the forum to find more details

I had this a couple of months ago. Some whining noise, hardly noticible except when driving between houses (reflections)
The indy cleaned up the disks but eventually it was the wheel bearing. He said that water had caused it to make it 'sing'.

Thanks all - took the car back to the dealers and after a test run they have booked the car in for Monday - I'll post any findings. Thanks again.

Hi all,
The car went back to the dealers where they investigated the noise from the rear drivers side - sounds like a metallic mosquito above about 35mph. It's not a broken spring (they had replaced one on the other near side rear they tell me before sale (good to hear)). They checked brake discs and pads and cleaned everything up put everything back together and the noise is still there. They have asked me to continue using the car - they say it is safe and in two weeks if still there they will get a specialist or BMW dealer to take a look. Anyone had a similar problem or sound? I am concerned that it might be the back axle or diff - any comments (I have a three month warranty and have used letters to inform the dealer of the problems - so far he's been really reassuring)

I had the same issue a while back , turns out it was the back plate just touching the disk and rubbing , a push on the back plate sorted it .

Trading Standards will confirm that you have a SIX month warranty, regardless of what the dealer thinks or says. Thats the law so don't be had over.

Is that for a second hand vehicle? I'm just concerned that the noise isn't something like the transmission or diff - really doesn't sound like it - but the noise is so regular - a distinct zzzzzzzzzzzz - like a plastic lolly stick on a bicycle wheel at speed...but very quiet and uniform in intensity at all speeds after about 35mph. I hope it is a wheel bearing or something else simple like kennyv mentioned. I'll check the back plate Gerry - thanks.

It could be rotor runout. The rotor side to side movement as it turns is too great causing it to push against the pads as it turns making a noise. Can be caused by a few things.
When you hear the noise, if you brake very slighly, does the noise go away?

Thanks Gargybloke - like the idea - tried the light braking and noise continues but keep comments coming - there must have been other Z4s with similar issue?
Latest is that the dealer has arranged for independent BMW specialist to have the car in on Friday - so still am pleased that dealership are responding well and am reassured by their response. We shall see ....I'll keep the forum informed of progress. Thanks all again.

Specialist garage was great - rang me to let me know the noise was a wheel bearing. That's a relief and the car is booked in to be fettled next Thursday. Never had a wheel bearing sound like that before mind - so I'll confirm after the job's done. Specialist garage looks good - I'll pass on details if all works out as planned. thanks all for comments

Wheel bearing replaced on drivers rear and noise has now gone! Kennyv you were right. Such a relief having the car repaired and ok - can (hopefully) begin to relax and enjoy the car without the worry it might be something more expensive. Odd noise for a wheel bearing however - something to watch out for - see descriptions earlier - nothing like other wheel bearing failures I've have had in the past. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and support. And - everything covered in warranty from the dealers (non specialist).
I'm in the North East (Newcastle) and the specialist garage which did diagnose and sorted the problem looks good and impressed me - Valley Motor Works - Team Valley.

I have the same sound on the Z I just picked up, I guess I will check the bearings and brakes at the same time.
