I hear a very clear noise (almost a rattle) from the manual gearbox when the engine is idling, gear in neutral and clutch is up. Am I too sensitive or what do you think? Anyone else who has this noise? It's a Z4-06, 3,0si, 12000km.

Thanks

Isn't that usually something to do with the clutch bearing and not the gearbox, not sure though :scratchhead:

My last car did this and so does my Z4, both were front engined rear wheel drive. I was lead to believe it was either the input shaft on the gearbox whirring or the clutch release bearing. Either way it was more an annoyance than an issue. In neutral with the clutch up the input shaft on the box is spinning withthe engine rpm, its probably that.

It's not uncommon, although I do not notice any noise from my '06 with the clutch up in neutral, other cars I have owned made similar noises.

Your not on your own mine sound like a bag of spanners in neutral
and it’s only done 5800 miles 8000km ish :(
I just turn up the radio
