No Z4 yet but already excited! (Update: Now with added Zed!)

Having had my pride and joy of the past 5 years written off a few weeks ago (Honda Integra Type-R) :( I've decided that I deserve something with a little more class and a fair wedge more torque (!), so after a few trips out in a friends Z4M I've ended up here and settled on a Z4!

I've been lurking around the forums for a week or so reading all the buyers guides, FAQ's etc and have decided that I'll be after a pre-facelift model, 2.5 ltr with heated seats as a minimum. Other 'wants' like steering wheel controls and wind deflector I'm happy to retro fit afterwards. Are electric mirrors standard as well or do I need to keep an eye out for them? ...I may JUST be able to fit it in the garage with those!

Only thing worrying me at the moment is the thought of the roof motor going. I can't really see there's a way to check the condition of this before buying a car though? Presumably just buying based on condition, service history, and crossing fingers is all you can really do?? :? Obviously you only get the horror stories posted (and the self repair guide seems a bit daunting!), is it a really common problem or should I just stop worrying about it and get on with buying one?!

EDIT: Also, if there's any advice on where to look other than Autotrader and Pistonheads it would be appreciated. Based in Reading, Berks, working in Marlow.

Cheers!

Welcome. I'm no expert but sure some pro's will be along to offer advice

Posts seem to come up on here fairly regularly on those selling their Zed's, inc //M's, so keep checking the 4 sale section.

Lovely as the //M''s are, recommend you have someone who you know to give it he love & extra attention it deserves without breaking the bank

Yup, always checking the for sale section!

Hopefully someone can offer a bit of feedback on the roof situation ...

Cheers! :-)

doogle83, welcome to the forum...
The roof motor is likely one of the more common problems with the Zed. I've had 3 Zeds and I had the problem with my 2003 and 2006 models. I've not had the issue yet on my now over 4 year old 2007 ///M. If the roof is operating properly it should go down in about 10 seconds. You would want to see the service history as if it has been replaced that should show up. I would say it's a good thing if it has been replaced. Short of removing the roof and checking the condition of the roof motor I can't think of anyway to know the condition. Perhaps someone else will have some additional ideas on that concern.

Thanks WLH, looking at the process to replace the motor I can't imagine there's a way to check it's condition before buying.

Guess I'll just make sure there's money budgeted for when the worst happens! :-)

Now to find me a new car! :-D p

Good luck with the search. Better to wait longer and find the right one  as there are plenty out there, and it's a buyers market

So I took a little trip down to the coast today and ended up coming back in a Zed! :D (Curse same day driveaway insurance lol!)

Was the colour I wanted with heated seats, it didn't have the air deflector but seemed to have pretty much everything else and I just couldn't resist it! Had a great drive back home, just wish I'd worn more clothes as just a thin jumper, even the seats and air con on full it did get a bit breezy on the motorway!

Anyway, few crappy phone pics below, I'll make sure to take some proper ones when I get a chance.

I want to change the aerial already for a stubby one and am planning to do the sound generator mod on the weekend when I have a bit more time. Oh, am I'll be after an M gear nob I think, the standard one seems a bit high when resting your arm in the middle console?
