No spare key

Hi all

I've just purchased my first Z4 - a 53 reg 2.2l

Now i only have one key - no spare.

Would you recommend getting a spare key?

I'm a real novice, so not sure how i go about it - whether i can just replace with a standard key to operate doors and ignition etc.

Any advice welcome! :-)

Living with a single key is a very risky thing to do - do you feel lucky?!

Only place for a replacement is a BMW dealers. Bring your V5, passport and £140 with you.

Thanks for the reply

As i said, i'm a novice - so don't laugh if i ask a silly question!

Is it not possible to get a basic spare key cut that will let me open the doors and start the car in the event of losing the main key?

That would then mean i only need to spend the £140 if i actually lose this one - not as a preventative measure!!!

Thanks guys - i hope i don't sound too Naive!!!

Opening the door is no problem - you can even get the BMW "emergency" key for £38 (again, bring V5 and passport with you) that can do this.

Starting the engine, however, requires an electronic transponder which is in the "proper" key and which is specific to your car. There's no alternative to the £140 key here (and if there was, the insurance rating of the car would probably be much higher!)

Thanks ZedFourM - that is the answer i needed to here - cheers! :D

I guess i'll take the risk while i worry about tyres, tax, insurance etc and i shall get another key in time.

Doesn't an emergency key come as standard with the Z4? in addition to the two main keys?

Yes, but the OP said that he only got 1 key with his car (and in my case, the emergency key was missing - which is how I know exactly how much a replacement costs! :) )

FOR A Z4 go to the Main Dealer.

I purchased an OEM key from the internet, got it cut but it wont work.

Had to buy an original key.

I checked binladi's advice about carkeyadvice.com and it's crap. :stoppimping:
I called a local locksmith found on http://www.carkeyadvice.com/united-kingdom-car-key-specialist-index who was up-front and immediately said that a BMW dealer was the cheapest way to get a coded key, he would get one from them and charge me on top! He thought it would be about £140 from BMW.

i was just trying to advice guys.. was not expecting all of this.. i never asked to replace a bmw car key so i dont even have any idea of the cost.. i i just found this two index online.. sorry about that.. :|

I think resurrecting a thread for a guy wanting a key nearly 4 months ago was the problem.
