No service required...!?

Hi all

Just dropped my Z (3.0si) in at the dealers for a service and its first MOT, as it will be 3 years old in a week.

The dealer took my key away and returned to advise it doesn't require a service :|

The car was serviced (oil service) last year at 2 years old / 11,000 miles and i've only done approx. 7,000 miles since - the display suggests an inspection service isn't required for another 11,000 miles.


The dealer said it should be serviced according to miles or every two years (whichever was sooner) - he said he was happy to take my money but advised it really wasn't necassary to have a service. I'm not in the habit of giving away money needlessly so cancelled the service, but being used to servicing my previous cars every year I wondered what everyone else thought!?!?

Any advice gratefully received. Bradders :)
 
I thought the service interval was as indicated and the oil service was as indicate or every 2 years. But yes, for the insp I'd wait.

As the car's in, personally, I'd get the oil changed - have mine done every year as it doesn't cost the earth and I do like to get the engine spinning every once in a while, so good to know it's done. Just so you know though, I tend to go slightly OTT with these things though - had the diff and gearbox oil changed last year and they both have lifelong oils in them :oops:
 
Cars that do less mileage will be more susceptible to water/fuel in the oil system as the shorter trips don't get the oil up to a high enough temp to burn off the contaminants, so leaving a car that only does short trips for 2 years seems excessive to me.

My oil services (on top of scheduled maintenance) are always every 6 months or 6,000 miles - whichever comes sooner (usually the miles in my case).

For the £50 cost of the oil & filter, and half an hour of my time, it seems poor form not too.
 
But then again the whole point of synthetics is that they don't degrade in the way mineral oils do, which is why so many modern cars can get away with longer intervals.

I can understand the exhaust system not staying the course on a low-miler, but I wouldn't be impressed with any modern BMW engine that allowed fuel/water into the oil under any circumstances, but then I guess the number of known serious engine failures on the Zed would be a good measure...... :tumbleweed:

Exactly the same happened to me on the 120d on Monday happily went in for "a" service as the car was
Calling for service 3/11 but it turns out that was the MOT which I had already completed by them but they had forgotten to reset
now reset correctly next service 2/12 or 9000miles oh and another MOT
Now that was my cheapest ever visit to the Dealer

Just as the dealer says but just coz it makes me feel good (and the Zed I think) I do an annual oil change but without the service interval reset. Agree with Lacroupade that it shouldn't need it but then old motoring habits die hard.... :oldman:
 
Thanks for the feedback, car just had a healthcheck and its MOT - will have an Inspection service this time next year!

Can never understand why, but car somehow feels 'tighter' since going in to the dealers!?!?
 
I agree 2 years is if using the car daily too long. I get the boxsters oil change yearly without fail. The Z4 only every 2 years while its used less.

I do a mid term oil change on mine at 7000ish miles. It probably is excessive but I plan to keep the car for the long term and it makes me feel like its being looked after properly. Compared to the amount of fuel it burns through the oil is a pretty low cost service.
