No running in service any more?

Got my new 35i a week ago and when I asked about running in / 1st service, I was told that it won't need a service for 2 years or 19000 miles, whichever is sooner.

Hard to believe that there's no initial service at 1000 - 1250 miles on the E89.

Yes I find it strange too, but it has 3 yrs warranty so if anything happens it should be covered ... All my M cars needed a run in service and this is the same as my 1M engine so why different?

Not officially as in theory there's no need, but in practice engine build hygiene isn't 100% so there maybe contaminants which can do damage in the engine. At the end of the running in period it's worth having an oil & filter change done if you think the car will be a keeper . I would go to a trusted Indi rather than a dealership for the oil change & not have them reset the oil service mileage.

Good idea! I think that I'll do just that.

While I'm sure there are additional mechanical reasons I'm also confident that they expect M cars to be 'thoroughly used' to their best effect while their run of the mill cars just used on that level occasionally.

Everything is bored slack nowadays due to materials being so much better .Manufacturer tolerances are so tight it's unreal . The newer breed of oils have a large role as well ... What your doing in your cars is nothing , we have 100k trucks on 80k service from new . So no oil change for 50,000 miles lol
