No flights in the UK from 12 today

6 hours of peace in the skies today, due to Iceland vulcano.

Wonder if they are burning all our money over there rather then give it back? :D

Yeah, I keep hearing about this... though I live only a few miles from Manchester Airport, and I've rarely seen the sky so clear and blue!

I'm not going to say I got sent home early. Nor that we had to cover all our uhm assets to avoid ash damage. What I will say is that the zombies are attacking!!!!!!

I just heard on the news some stupid people complaining that 'iceland nicked all our money, now they're stopping our flights' like anyone can control these things

would be a different story if they hadn't stopped the flights and one fell out of the sky when its engines got clogged :headbang:

I was on the radio?

Seriously though, is this ash much different to fly through then say Saharah sand?

Don't forget rain! Ash would probably interfere with a few things, for one the air that goes to the jet for cooling and such comes from the engine.

This is at 6 km high at the moment, according to the news no fear of it raining down in the UK.

Interesting enough, why can continental airlines fly through it? No closures in Amsterdam airport. Not checked Ireland though.

I blame Gordon Brown.

My Boss was flying back to the UK for leave, and got diverted to France. I imagine he isn't too happy!

Ash is very different from sand. Ash has a very high silica content and is soft but very abrasive. IE. jagged shape. Silica's melting point is the same as the internal temp within a jets combustion chamber. So it melts and clogs things up. not good, as this will generally make a plane fall out of the sky. Sand is rounded in shape, very hard and will cause impact abrasion but will not melt at the jet engines temp's and will pass through. Will need a rebuild though.

I can tell you from personal Mt. St. Helens experience. If the ash lowers to ground level. DO NOT touch your or any one else's car.

Best Regards
Jerry

If the cloud is on the left of the UK, what is stopping you flying to Paris / Amsterdam etc etc. Those airports did not close, so why would you cancel the flights that go that direction?

I wonder how many carbon credits Iceland will need to purchase to offset the damage to the environment... :P

Yep! Al Gore is going to pocket a few more million dollars of carbon credit money.

Awesome website here: http://www.radar-virtuel.com/

It shows all the planes on a map, their position speed etc. Yesterday it crashed Internet Explorer because of the amount of planes (even when there were very few over the UK). Today almost the whole of Northern Europe is empty.

Very cool website. Surely that can not be all though? No planes in Turkey?

Nice touch that you can click on each plane to find all info about it.
