No electric today

NPO…National power outage is the top risk this winter from a resilience viewpoint … :tumbleweed:

I'm still interested to know if everyone swapped to an electric car tomorrow if there will be eternal darkness :?

If things go right (I know that's a big IF with our industries/governments f**k ups) by the time there is a high percentage of EVs in the fleet they will have bi-directional charging and smart charging controls so cars will avoid charging at peak times and even support the grid. Bascially EVs should not make the peak demand go up, they should make the demand be flatter, which works well with nuclear, or supports renewable a bit which is the riskiest thing for the future.

I bought a generator a few years back as electricity supply is so dodgy. Was only a couple of hundred and works great to keep the fridge / freezer and all computer equipment going.

Still have a hot water tank so that lasts a fair amount, but it is the freezer that really is risky to let that go down too far.

Yep I think it would be

Last year I spoke to a few guys who worked for SPEN while they were fixing a cable that had been found by a digger and damaged.
They said there was no hope for the grid surviving if everybody moved to EVs as they are struggling to fix cables from the 70s never mind upgrading for EVs.

Woke up to no power in the house. Using bbq to heat water to keep fish in tank warm :headbang:

 I had the same issue on Monday afternoon, used tea lights to heat up a pan of water :)
Get the water hot and pour into a bottle and place that in the tank, saves constantly removing/adding water

Or go to the local chippy and buy some chips, this way you only have to heat the fish once......

Still not on, went to argos and bought a camping stove and kettle, much easier now to fill bottles as you say for the tank. Good idea with the candles though. Biggest thing is putting oxygen into the tank, we have a battery one but it’s a bit feeble.

I’ll tell the wife? No maybe not, very stressed at the moment.

Looked a while ago into buying a battery back up but seemed very pricey for the length of time they last.

Yes - not heard of that one either, I have days that I am without running on diesel

This is what I was thinking, I mean they got worried in years past when the Queens speech came on and everyone put the kettle on

Are you doing shadow puppets? Memories of the 1970's. I hope it's back on soon. We used to get a lot of power cuts here but I think they fixed the underlying problem in the end.
