No claims bonus question

Hello

I am looking to buy a Z4 in the next few weeks. I have been getting insurance quotes and I am a little confused by the wording of the bit about current NCB.

I am driving a V-plate Ford Focus at the moment and have owned it since April 2005 without making a claim. Prior to that I drove an R-plate Peugeot 106 from July 2004-April 2005, also without making a claim.

How much NCB do I actually have that can be used on a Z4? It was my understanding that I could transfer a NCB from one car to another. Is this not the case? Or does it vary from insurer to insurer.

Thanks in advance.

I would say you have 6 years NCB ( or 7 depending on dates ) You have the NCB not the cars

Your NCB is simply how many years of insurance you can prove without a claim, it doesn't matter if you chop and change cars during that time. Your current insurer should be able to tell you what NCB it shows on their screen; they will also issue you a letter stating your NCB should you leave. If you leave before the policy expires you lose that year, so if you cancelled a policy mid way through during the last 7 years it might affect how many you hold, but it should be 5+ by the sounds of it

Thanks. I will probably have to give Admiral a call (they are the cheapest on moneysupermarket and give a discount for multi-car - I am keeping my Focus) to clarify when it comes to buying, just to make sure!

Edit: The Bell Direct NCD pop-up panel was the one that confused me. It talked about having NCD for a car rather than for a person...

In addition, Admiral's own "pop-up help panel" for the NCB states that you cannot split a NCB over previous vehicles. The example is given as: if you owned a car for 2 years and then another for 3, that woudl be 3 years NCB and not 5.

But you can only use the NCB on one car / insurance policy if you take out a second concurrent policy that starts at 0%

Yes, I understand that. I plan to cancel my current Focus insurance policy (started it in July 2010 so should have 5 years NCB on the Focus minimum) and take out a multi-car policy with Admiral, with the NCB transferred onto the Z4. Is that doable?

You will have to ask Admiral likely only they can give you that level of detail

Don't forget that if you have had a 24 or 36 month gap inbetween cars/insurance, then some insurances companies will say your NCB is void

The same may apply if you move from a company car to a private one

Neither are applicable, thankfully.

Anyway, I guess I will be calling Admiral up soon. Thanks all.

i have my z insured with admiral and because my second car was with elephant, they put me on their multi-car policy. i have about 5 years no claims for both cars ended up saving me an extra 100 pounds on the z4's policy

i have got maximum no claims, i was also aloud to use this on my zed - i had built no claims up owning 1 car, when i got my zed as a weekend toy, most insurance companies would not give me any no claims bonus

not sure that makes sense lol

I have an Admiral multicar policy, bonues earned on one car and they gave me full NCB on the second one too, although they didn't have to, it was just an introductory thing. They'll probably do something similar for you.

I am with Morethan and have only had my own insurance for 9 years had companey car for 30 years before that. they gave me full NCB from the word go and have had 4 cars over the past 9 years and have never had a problem with my NCB and had a claim 5 years ago. :)

I gave Admiral a call last night and they said it wasn't a problem to move my NCB to the Z4. It would only be an issue if I didn't cancel my current policy, because obviously the NCB is active on that until July.
