No Aux Option :(

I was recently given an Aux lead for the Z4, look like this one... http://thumbs2.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/mCpQiJhQsxwmikgqatD1z4A.jpg

I have removed Stereo, and found there is two plugs in the back. 1 main block and a smaller white plug that fits in the bottom left of the block. I don't have a CD changer installed.

The Aux plug only fits into the bottom right of the block (where there is a space) but when plugged in, no Aux option :x

Z3 3.0Si 2006. Any ideas? :headbang:

Or alternatively, buy an after market CD player and get a single DIN converter for the Z. The head unit is really poor quality in terms sound output and would recommend something else, but obviously you'll loose the OEM look inside. Up to you :)

Really don't want to lose the OEM look. I feel in a car like this, an aftermarket DIN converter looks a bit out of place, but thats just my oppinion :?

If none this makes sense, id suggest buying the kit and try to use that. You can buy the AUX kits for Mini Coopers and try that.

Take a look at this thread. Your cable harness needs to have that resistor and capacitor. Its how the radio detects whether its available or not. Not sure if its the same for your model. (Soldering those on will be hard to do if you dont have the equipment.)

Also, to check if your connections/pins are correct. For no CD changer it should be 3,4,10
Looking at the back of the radio,

Honestly, ditch the OEM stereo and get something better in there. I could not BELIEVE the difference in sound quality when I put an Alpine in my Golf recently. I've always been the same as you, OEM all the way, but am now kicking myself that I wasted so much time/money on crappy solutions for crap BMW stereos. I get the OEM obsession with some things, but not with audio. If you actually like music the sound should be way more important than how the thing looks, can you imagine a guitarist saying "this guitar sounds s**t but looks amazing!"

I got one of these - for £70 you really can't go wrong:

Bluetooth music streaming and calls, and a USB port. Welcome to the 21st century! In fact I imagine the red colour would match the OEM interior lighting pretty well, and the Z4 DIN fascias don't look half as daft as ones in the bigger BMWs do.

If you go this route, make sure you find out what setup you have. There are 3 types of configurations
Standard 6 speakers - easy to swap
Hi-Fi 10 speakers - i dont know very much about this one. Should be pretty easy too, but you have to deal with the amplifier in the boot
top hi-fi 10 speakers -not so easy. Also know as Carver or DSP (Digital Signal Processing). I think people recommend swapping out the amplifier and the subwoofer as well because its difficult to get something that will work with the existing parts. (amplifier requires digital signal while most are analog. Subwoofer impedance is higher than typical subwoofers, basically most amps cant supply enough power.)

Sorry if the is more than you were asking for. I hope it helps. You should look at the forum some more before swapping.

As above check the aux cable you have.

Agree with you though, after market head unit look shite.

Can someone with aftermarket unit for example Alpine unit post a picture here so we can see how it actually looks. Im interested in changing mine to aftermarket too.

If it makes sense, when i wanna sell the car, i can put the OEM unit back in? That shouldnt be a problem right??

Apologies to the OP for the slight hijack, but is there no other way around this issue for those of us with DSP? I might have purchased the various leads and stereo surround required to fit an aftermarket stereo without realising the above fact which might have left me with a stereo unable to output any sound until it was swapped back

Just wondering if there are any other options to replacing the amp which is probably beyond me (although I'd be happy to hear from anyone that has done this to know how easy it actually is to do).

Again, apologies for the hijack.

Well, Amp is blown. So the radio system doesn't work and i haven't found a solution that was cheap and that i liked the finished look. The only things i find on the forum seem to be either a) they took it to a place that specializes in car audio or b) a long convoluted work around and lots of electrical work.
