No auto start/stop button.

Morning guys,

I've just taken delivery of my new Z4 (LCI) and I've got a few questions I'm hoping you can help me with:

I've got electric folding mirrors - can I programme the key to fold/unfold them when I lock /unlock?

Second, the car does not have a button to disable the start/stop button - any ideas? The car I test drove had this and according to the manual it should be there? The car is an auto - I don't know if this changes the mechanism for disabling it?

Any help is much appreciated - the car is fantastic!

Cheers,

my auto doesnt have a stop/start function.... well not one that i am aware of

According to the manual autos should have this function too. When the brake is applied and the car is stationary...? At least I'm not the only one.

BMW are actually very misleading on this, all the info I've got from drivers on here is that the Autos have no start/stop. Here is the wording from the Efficiency page on the Z4:

The Auto Start-Stop function in the BMW Z4 switches off the engine as soon as the vehicle is not moving and the driver disengages the clutch (for manual gearboxes) or operates the brake (for automatic transmissions).
http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/new-vehicles/z4/roadster/2012/efficiency.html

Additionally here is the 'Efficient Dynamics' section from the official brochure for the Z4 LCi:
BMW EfficientDynamics standard features
Brake Energy Regeneration, EPS Electric Power Steering, Auto Start Stop function, gearshift point indicator (manual models), intelligent lightweight construction, on-demand operation of ancillary units, map-controlled oil pump, detachable a/c compressor, tyres with reduced roll resistance

Note the "(manual models)" only applies to the gearshift point indicator (which would be pointless on an Auto).

I think there is definitely grounds to question the dealers on this - maybe get some money back.

The pre-lci autos don't have it, I don't know if its been added or not, I'd guess not tho - does the engine switch off? If it doesn't, then I'd say its safe to assume you don't have it :)

Not got an e89, but could it be something set through iDrive on the LCI ?

No idea but I'm going to drop in to the dealer today as apparently they can code the key to fold the mirrors when you lock the car.

Will keep you all updated. As far as I'm aware the car should have the auto start/stop function. Utter pain in the backside - from previous car with it - but it's more a question of why does it not have it if it should?

Thanks for the info.

Completely agree. I would be asking them what BMW's official estimates were for fuel savings with the start/stop system - then getting the equivalent amount over 3 years refunded to you.

Total thread hijack - I know that LCI is effectively 'facelift', but what the hell does LCI actually stand for ??

Life Cycle Impulse

Ps. I wanted to look knowledgable and intelligent but google was my friend!

Edit: is this a potential Hill Start Assist debacle all over again? Bad BMW.

Stop/Start in an auto is not the best of ideas to be honest. I know a few Audi drivers that just don't like it... you pull up to a junction, momentarily stop, but then want to go and the engine stops!

Very interested to hear how the mirror fold by key goes,
My 2010 Sdrive30i was supposed to have had this bit of programming done when I got it used in Nov, I can't get it to work so just assumed it wasn't possible and salesman had got it wrong. So if yours works I'll be going back to dealer.

From BMW website

"The Auto Start-Stop function in the BMW Z4 switches off the engine as soon as the vehicle is not moving and the driver disengages the clutch (for manual gearboxes) or operates the brake (for automatic transmissions). However, intelligent electronics only switch off the engine when no energy is needed by other loads and there is no adverse effect on your safety and travelling comfort. For example, the engine remains active until the optimum running temperature has been attained or until the interior climate has reached the desired range. Depending on the type of transmission in the vehicle, when the engine has been switched off by the Auto Start-Stop function, either releasing the brake or engaging the clutch will cause it to start up again automatically in a fraction of a second. The result is less fuel consumption and fewer emissions"

Is there any difference between 4cyl and 6cly engines and the 8 speed auto vs DCT auto as far as start stop is concerned.

Apparently the car doesn't have start stop. I'm not overly fussed but a company as big as BMW should get its advertising correct.

The car is going in to the garage tomorrow to have the key re-programmed to do the mirrors. Will keep you posted.

This http://www.bmw.com/com/en/newvehicles/z4/roadster/2013/_shared/pdf/Z4_catalogue.pdf?download=true seems to indicate start stop is only on manual 18i,20i and 28i.

Auto Start/Stop function. The BMW Z4 sDrive18i, BMW Z4 sDrive 20i
and BMW Z4 sDrive28i with six-speed manual gearbox come with the
Auto Start-Stop function. During brief stops, for example at a red light,
this function automatically switches off the engine to save fuel. A “Start-
Stop” symbol in the Info Display indicates that the function is active.

The UK brouchure won't let me copy and paste but has different text which implies all models auto and manual, see this link page 19.
