No Airbag Disable Option

Hi everyone,

I have a 2003 3.0l manual z4 (UK) ... which I love!

I have also however recently had my first baby and will ultimately have to use my car to transport my son once my wife goes back to work. My problem with this is that my model appears to have no way of disabling the passenger airbag.

The manual states to turn off the airbag on the side of the passenger side dash using the car key. However, I have a blank plastic circle where this key hole should be. I also don't have the light by my gear stick to state wheter the airbag is active or not.

From what I can see, this is very common on the earlier Z4 models... which sucks. Is there anything I can do to maybe get a switch installed? I'm sure I could get it deactivated at a garage but it's the kind of thing I would want to be turning on and off regularly.

Good afternoon and welcome to the mad house.
Congratulations on your first off-spring.
As you have discovered, not all cars had this option. It goes hand in hand with the isofix brackets in the bottom of the seat back too.
I am not certain if it is possible but the good news is that as an 03 model your car will have a lot of the extra looms installed, just no parts connected to them. Fingers crossed this may mean you can plug and play but I'm not 100% certain.
If you can then you will need the light on the centre console too, as I believe you legally need to have an indication when the airbag is deactivated.
If it can be done then I'm sure someone on here will have done it.
Try a search to see what comes up.

There you go, saved you searching.

[ref]Jakg[/ref], I know what you're saying, but even with isofix, if the airbag goes off you're stuffed.

Hi,
Airbag deactivation and isofix were optional in some markets. Realoem shows a retrofit kit under ”Retrofitting/Conversion/Accessories - Communication And Information”, but only for 10/2004 to 1/2006 vehicles and says it’s discontinued. I tried with my VIN from 2005, take a look using your VIN?
I think I’ve seen the instructions somewhere and it was not too complicated iirc. If you sourced the switch and the light, fabricating the wiring would be the difficult part.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on becoming a dad.

It looks like you've found the answer to your question, so now all we need is a photo or two of your car!

Thanks everyone!

Looks a bit complicated for me to be honest haha - wouldn't have a clue what I'm doing with the wires under there! Will research further though thanks.

I've attached a few pictures of my z4 for you Mr Tidy :)

If the loom is already there it shouldn't be too tricky?
See if you can find someone nearby who can help?
