Nikon Lens - Walkabout/Travel

So after the thread about Nikon 3200's I ended up getting one in October. I've really enjoyed learning about the whole new world of aperture/shutter sped/ISO etc etc.

I want to move on from the kit lens and with a view to our honeymoon travelling the Italian lakes next summer, want recommendations for a good leave-on lens. Of course I want good pictures, but I'm not a professional and accept the compromises of a budget zoom lens within reason.

What is the kit lens you have?

Its the standard 18-5mm VR f/3.5-5.6.

I have been given a Nikkon 18-105mm and its lovely but I have to give it back. Played with the sigma 18-250mm and really like it. The zoom is mega and I can see it being really versatile while exploring the Lakes.

How easy is it to correct any of the quality shortcomings with editing software?

For me, walkabout lenses need to be light.

I think your existing 18-55 should cover a good range of subjects. (accounting for the cropped sensor you've effectively got a 27mm to 82.5mm)

I personally find myself reaching for my 30mm prime for a no hassle great all rounder lens, so I'd suggest you consider a prime lens over another zoom.

I think this is a very good answer. I hanker after a fast prime.

But if you are after a long throw lens, then the Sigma would get my vote - they do an 18-250 for just a few quid more :wink:
