Thinking of a DSLR having looked at the Canon 650d and Nikon 5200 I think I'm heading towards the discounted Nikon D7000 ( it's soon to be replaced I believe) - anyone got one ? And if so any sample photos with it?

cheers

I went For a canon kiss4. Very user friendly. Good spec great price. Look at my photo comp entries for pics.

Tbh camera body isnt that important! Go with one that is robust (Nikon tend to drop better!) and that u find comfortable/easy to use.

It's the lenses that make the shot. Buy the best u can afford. Broke both my standard canon lenses very early on!

I recently purhased a DSLR, after looking at the same options between canon and Nikon, I found the nikon D5100 had some fantastic discounts and went with that one.

another vote from the canon camp.

In the past Nikon have had the better low light capability, but canon have arguably had the better optics.

Eiher way you cant go wrong.

Out of the cameras you've mentioned, on paper, both the Nikons are superior.

as Danny has mentioned, lenses play more of a role in getting the shot you want. You'll be better off going for one model lower on your camera and putting the money towards a better lens.

There's nothing wrong with the kit lens per say. But you could be getting a better lens for your money.

I bought a sony a290 with the 18-55 kit as my first sort of SLR. Come upgrade time for some new glass, I found myself lusting over Canon's L series lenses, ended up getting a 60d with a 30mm sigma f/1.4

On a final note, depending on how much time you're willing to put into photography (i.e. what modes to shoot with, experimenting with DOF etc) I would suggest you start with a prime lens. They have a fixed focal length and it forces you to be more creative to get the shot you want. Obviously a zoom of some form can be useful too.

Not taken many pics with it yet but upgraded to the D7000 a few weeks ago. Impressed so far even over my D90 that still remains an awesome camera! Got it for a great price also! Nikon have just bought out the D7100 though, but at a cost! Strangely they are still selling the D7000 alongside the 7100!

DigitalRev did a comparison.

The guy presenting is sometimes annoying, but it is a comparison! :P

This vid has the D7000 against the 7D. And it has a car in it! :P

Generally its the lenses that drive the choice. Canons lenses are better but the current Nikon bodies are beating the Canons.

After having the 18mp sensor in the 7D I wasnt overly impressed with it. There is a slightly updated one in the 650D. But its an old sensor and its performance shows that. But then im very anal about the image quality. For the average user printing up to A4 the quality wont be distinguishable. Also depends what lenses you are marrying with the body. All these new high MP sensors need good glass to resolve the IQ and the standard lenses don't offer that quality so results aren't as good as they could be.

Put it this way putting a poor lens on a high MP camera is like putting plastic wheels on the Z4. Great car but ruined because of the tyres lol.

The Canons are much better for someone leaning tho, the controls are much less complex and menu systems easier to navigate. The Canon system is a winner over the Nikon in my mind, but the Nikons with the new sony sensors are slightly better at the moment. But the rate they bring out cameras that could switch at any time. Canon are about to announce their new sensor tech with the 70D/7DMKII which will come down into the XXXD line. So I would wait if you like the Canon camp.

All the cameras you are looking at are awesome, but I would put an air of caution on the MP count higher is not always better, higher pixel density means more noise. Also the 7D and D7000 are more advanced cameras, bigger and heavier.

What I would do is go have a look at them and handle them. See which you like best. They are so similar its completely down to preference.

Might be worth looking at the mirrorless market. Small compact size cameras with DSLR sensor quality.

I took a few with the 7D which is the same sensor as the 650D

But most of my favourite pics were taken with an old 40D so...

As a D7000 sample this was a quick snap taken with the D7000 using a Sigma 10-20 lens, camera on full auto, no flash. The pendulum was moving.

Most of these are taken with a D7000

Just remember its not the camera, its how you use it and what u do with it.
These images could have been taken on a 10year old D50

This is true, although I'm finding the newer cameras seem to give far superior RAW images when working in photo editing software. The D7000 over the D90 gives 14 bit RAW photos as an option also.

No real reason for me to upgrade from the Nikon D90 to be honest, just fancied a change as I'd had the D90 for a few years.

For most people something like the new Nikon Coolpix A would be all that's needed! Mind you, that's not going to be cheap!! :o

I bought a D5100 last year. I have been very happy with it's performance. Battery life is excellent. The articulating screen is great. The sensor and processor are the same for the 5100/7000. But hindsight being 20/20. I wish I would have bought the D7000 for one reason. It has a metal frame and can handle a heavy lens without breaking should you forget and pick it up by the body with a big lens attached. My Sigma 50-150 F/2.8 tips the scales at a robust 1.4 Kg. I must at all times be very mindful of how I handle the 5100 with the Sigma lens on. Truth be told. One should always be careful with a big lens on. But we do sometimes forget or are in a hurry and set the camera down harder than we intended. Your bag may slip from your fingers and take a small hit. A robust frame will give it a bit of protection.

One can hardly go wrong with a Canon or Nikon. Even in the most remote location. One will be nearer to a dealer/repair for one of those brands than any other. I can also attest to the fact that the most rubbish thing about my camera and all my equipment. Is me. My camera and lenses have never muffed a shot. I sure have though.

Sorry. Forgot to add a picture. Again. This is from a D5100 which has the same sensor and processor as the 7000.

This was my submission to the 2013 calendar. D5100 Aperture priority, Sigma 50-150@85MM F/14@1/30 sec 0EV This is a jpg conversion from an enormous 85mb tiff file. I added just a small touch of color saturation & removed the red reflector from the bumper. It was processed with DxO optix pro to remove any lens distortion.

THis set was taken using a D7000 with 70-200f2.8 (some with a 1.4TC)

After all that plumbed for a Cannon 60D - SWMBO preferred the camera body and the flip out screen

Thanks for the Help
