Night Breakers? Ball breakers, more like.

OSRAM XENARC NIGHT BREAKERS LASER D1S PK32d-2 66140XNN-HCB

"BRIGHTNESS UP TO +200%
DISTANCE UP TO 250M
LIGHT COLOUR UP TO +20%"
(£182.40 inc. fitting by BMW independent & VAT)

Reality ... no different from/better than the single Osram Xenarc electronic [sic] and single Phillips Xenstart they replaced.

Indeed, maybe not quite as good.

Philips Xenon X-tremeVision gen2 I've been happy with the Philips extreme these last several years, after seeing some reviews, i steered clear of Nightbreakers.
They are on all the time, only replaced one when later i found it was damp in the driver that cause bulb to go out.
So probably easy running 1800 hours by now, being on daily.

Surprised - was thinking of changing mine out this winter (7 years old now).

Drove a new car recently & the lights were much brighter than mine, very noticable. Still HID tech, was assuming it was just down to aging over time.

Osram’s data sheet for both lamps you mention state flux at 3200 lumens in both cases..

Their statement applies to bulbs ‘legal minimum’

Enjoy

[ref]B21[/ref], I was thinking about changing mine as I believe they are the original lamps. I assumed they may degrade over time. What’s your experience mate as I understand you have tried most?

I only did it once ..but on both e89s…the originals go pinkish and dim..so the new ones are a marked improvement..

Have you checked they are genuine?
On the case will be a QR code, scan with your phone it'll open a webpage with a code that you will find on the packaging if they are genuine.
Literally millions of fakes out there, even on Amazon etc

Will do. Thank you.

I've decided to give the d1s d-lumina LEDs a go as a replacement for my 7 years old HIDs - should be here Wednesday so will report back after I give them a go.

Fingers crossed.

Hi Bustreboo

The reflective coating within the projectors will have dulled over time. Swapping your projectors will see the largest gains, rather than you picking 'the best bulbs'

I have just recently had my light projectors swapped out, and new bulbs installed by Tupps @ EM Tuning.
https://www.emtuning.co.uk/product/hella-g5-performance/

The increase in performance is a massive improvement over the originals.

There are others on the forum that have done this in the past, which inspired me, to get mine done.

Kind Regards
Bushy

I somewhat agree, but if you changed the bulbs at the same time, how do you know what made the most difference?

Bulbs could have been 10% of the improvement seen, or could have been 90%.

Ok, quick comparison to the 7 year old d1s bulbs.

Way brighter - maybe twice as bright (very obvious). Beam pattern on the garage door looks to be the same.

£65 quid, assuming they stay working I'm very impressed.

Need to go for an extended drive in the dark to properly try them out.

There’s more to just “brightness” with Nightbreakers /Xtremevision HID upgrades. I can understand why many are disappointed when they don’t “see” eye-searing double brightness or a huge difference lol

Those HID upgrades bulbs (along with halogen) are adjusting and sharpening the beam pattern (all the light underneath the cut off), so it subtly boosts the important parts of the beam with more intensity, like the “hot spot” and width. They actually DO end up +200% within that beam pattern. They throw much further out into the night. They also take human eye science into consideration because too much foreground light (what people expect when they buy upgrades bulbs) will constrict your pupils while driving, making your distance vision suffer.

It is very very complex stuff and as you can see, very hard to market correctly. Your beam reaches much further in the distance without blinding everybody, which is why they are legal. They’re extremely precise bulbs that have to abide by the law of physics, which is why they are so expensive. You’re buy top top quality and engineering.

You may not notice much a difference, so go to a very dark, wooded road with no street lighting and you’ll be absolutely glad you have those bulbs lol. Especially if it’s raining at night and you’re by yourself.

Problem with these lights, scary driving when the fog comes down.

And better if the shutter plate not so sharp. Perhaps if was serrated to create a fuzzy area rather than sharp cut off.

After a run out last night with the LED d1s bulbs in, I wouldn't recommend them & will be returning to amazon.

On low beam they are really good - strong white output & noticeably better than my 7 year old HIDs. But on high beam they seem way less impressive, noticeable duller than than the old HIDs.

I've been doing a bit of research & it seems the consensus that HIDs degrade between 5 & 10% in light output per year, with this in mind mine are likely operating around 50% brightness when compared to new.

I will grab some of the osram ballbreakers & see how that improves matters.
