nice smart top video

I don't think it's a base model
It's a msport
It has a 2.5 l 6 cylinder engine with 205 bhp and they are a pretty quick car and sound amazing

May be for some people the bigger engine cost a lot more to insure

I get it , but then I have one :D

In my owners manual it says the roof operates while moving at up to 40kph that's without smart top. Still have to hold the button though. I'll try it tomorrow. It says not if its windy or driving over rough ground.

Yes, depends on model year.

My old one didn't work while driving and neither does my new one! :(

If it does BMW must be ok with opening on the move without damage. Smart top would be safer I think, rather than holding a button while driving. It opens and closes from remote, just tried it. But again you have to hold the button.

They upgraded the roof motor on the 62 plates onwards to enable open/closing on the move.

Oooh, just missed out on that then :(

I still like the idea of the Smart Top and its functions, some of which are quite useful, but I just know if I installed it the roof would pack up just as I'm reversing out the garage :)

Tim.

You can install the SmartTop on any model AFAIK... allows roof movement up to 25mph. I'd only start the process on a smooth road when there's no wind though to reduce the stress on the mech.

thanks for the reply.. who would be best to reach out to before I take the plunge - Smart Top themselves / Smart Top retailer / BMW ?

the usual newbie apologies!

Mods4cars is the manufacturer. Best to get in touch with them.

Afaik the new roof mech is just able to open at a slightly higher speed on new cars . You'd be able to control that speed and other options with the smarttop. Don't think there's any reason for concern or that it won't work.

thanks, i'll fire them off an email

my only reason for concern was that if holding the usual button doesn't work while moving (as it does post 2012), perhaps it cannot be opened while moving...

also Maniac, I saw you mentioned somewhere that installing the Smart Top has caused broken roofs in some cases? was it just a bothced installation or it it a real risk...?

I've read in one place at least where someone's had issues but while they had smarttop installed, it was a roof microswitch that failed.

I have a smart top, and though it tried to kill me while fitting it (do a search), it works fine (touch wood).
