Nice - France - recommendations

After Paris in early January had to be cancelled last minute we are having another attempt at heading to France. Going to Nice for 4 nights in May and staying at a hotel on the Promenade des Anglais. I haven't been to the South of France for about 15 years. Top tips on things to do and restaurants please :)
 
Hi Ruby, we stay in Mougins when we go, it's really easy to get about. You're ideally placed for Cannes, St Paul De Vence, Monnaco, Bono's place in Eze sur Mer! As for restaraunts etc there are many, just follow your nose, you'll love it! :thumbsup:
 
Blimey - so much to see and do. One of my favourite parts of the world. Cannes, Antibes, Villefranche Sur Mer, St Paul De Vence, St Tropez, Monaco etc. Even a little trip into Italy?

The train service along the coast is quick and cheap. You can get to Cannes and Antibes in less than half-an-hour and to Villefranche in 5 minutes, Monaco in 10.

If you have a hire car head NW through Castellane to the Verdon Gorge and take a drive around the gorge on the Routes Des Cretes - stunning! Do it clockwise though because half way around it becomes one way.
 
Wouldnt return to St Tropez for any money , total PITA to get into , overrun ,overpriced overrated & rammed full of knobs & tourists :o
The reat of the region is a sheer delight , Could spend a weekend in Antibes alone .
Port Grimaud & Grasse are great but Biot our favourite off the track visit :thumbsup: go see the glass blowing man :oops: amazing

+1 on this and, if you've never been to Monaco, it's well worth a day trip - I found walking the Grand Prix circuit a strangely evocative experience

+1 Especially Villefranche Sur Mer is really nice to go out for diner, it's a little village by the water with a lot of stairs but really charming!
Fréjus is nice as well.

Further away Milan is nice indeed, especially for shopping, but for the best views and roads (if you would go by car) you might as well go all the way up to the Garda lake.

It all depends on how long you are going on holiday. If for example you are going for 2 weeks, I would stay 4 or 5 days in Nice, a couple of days at the Garda lake, 1 or 2 days in Venice and drive back over Germany. Believe me, it's worth it. And if you can make it, you should stay 1 or 2 days by the Plitvice lakes in Croatia. One of the most beautiful places in the world.
When you drive back over Germany, make sure you pass by the road B500, one of the most beautiful roads in Europe. If you are going back home from the Garda lake, you can take the famous Stelvio pass as well...
 
escape from nice after a couple of days and explore the coast roads,even better in the z, great scenery and little restaurants, drive 60 k down to frejus and explore the smaller towns. drive up to grasse where they make the perfume, stunning mountain road with views over the gorge and forest. stunning place ecept in august :thumbsup:
 
And eze village.. :) Not so far from nice.
I do recommend also that Tram.

Thanks guys that's great info :thumbsup: given me a few ideas. We are flying and not planning on getting a car, also staying only for 4 nights so won't be doing any road trips. Good to know that we could use the train to get to a lot of nice places and they're not all too far either. Really looking forward to a change of scenery and fingers crossed some sunshine.

Try Monaco by train, or the old town in Cannes (taxi I think best bet).

Got back last night from our sunny 4 day break to the South of France. What a trip! This thread gave me so many good ideas and I'm glad I took your advice on using the buses and trains - they were topnotch, cheap and efficient. Nice is an amazing city and we also managed to get around a fair bit: to Cannes to see them setting up for the film festival next week, St Paul de Vence, Monaco and Monte Carlo and saw the prep for the F1 Grand Prix coming up and walked along part of the track. Thanks guys for letting me know about Villefranche sur mer - it was really beautiful and serene, one of my favourite stops. Can't wait to go back and get to some of the other places I didn't get to like Eze, Antibes and Menton. Mike was happy too as he spent the whole time car spotting out there and is currently compiling his album of fancy cars.
