Hi All ,

Ordered some NHK® Ver.5 Bi-LED 3.0" Projector lamps, to fit into my xenon oem headlights . Over the years these headlights have had a few mods , I originally removed the orange hockey sticks and added LED rings using CJs guide then several years later kept having problems with the stock ignitor ballasts getting water ingress (bad rear seals etc) so used Phillips aftermarket ballasts inside the headlight rather than the stupid water collecting location bmw chose under the lights. This made them very reliable for several years until one of the aftermarket connectors developed an internal short a few weeks back. I was going to replace the connector but thought the original bulbs from 2004 are getting on now compared to modern cars so decided to buy these NHK projector housing units after watching lots of comparison videos and reading reviews (they seem brighter than Morimoto m2LED

My plan is to unbolt the 4 nuts on the reflector / projector and bolt on these new LED ones , electrically it will be straight forward but I think I’ll need to fabricate an adaptor plate as the bolt holes on stock projector will be different to the NHK one. Both are 3” lenses so it shouldn’t be too far off. Has anyone upgraded like this before with projectors with inbuilt led?

I chose this method as it seems the projector is as important as the led , so sticking in LED lamps into the existing projectors won’t get that super sharp beam cut off and ultra bright like modern led headlights.

Thanks

Interesting, if morimotos are a direct swap then these may also be, arrived this morning will bolt one in later today and see if it fits.

Not a direct fit but the bottom 2 holes line up perfectly on the captive (but can be removed) stock bolts , top 2 holes are about 6mm off but the captive bolts sit next to the new projector housing so just need to extend the housing out using a couple of thin strips of metal , one side bolted to the holes on the new projector the other to the captive bolts.

You have to cut the captive washers off the stock bolts so the projector will slide further towards the front of the light as the OEM one is deeper. I then built up the height on the captive bolts using several washers until the lens is a few mm away from the front of the reflector ring like the stock projectors.

Wired it all up and it works perfectly! The fan is very quiet and doesn't appear to move a great deal of air, my only concern is it will get hot inside the sealed unit with the doors on and maybe lower the lifespan of the LED. I wouldn't want to make any holes as ive learnt in the last if there is any holes in the seal of the rear door you get condensation. All of the lights are LED I did the indicators , high beam, Angel rings years back so seal the door with gasket sealant which works perfectly... no condensation at all.

Impressed with the build quality of them, they have that expensive feel. Box came like apple products too to fit them exactly, lets hope I haven't made a bad choice not going with Morimoto, I just want the brightest possible legal 50w light lol fed up of not seeing on country roads all these years. I know it has a lot to do with the Z4 being low but this should hopefully make a difference! Will post some pics when done and do a left side/right side comparison before I fit the other I think.
