Next car, advice

Hi, Im planning on changing my car, it has to be another BMW, and ideally id like it to be another zed, but thats not totally essentaial. The only considerations are that is HAS to be quicker AND more economical than my current car, the current one is a 53 plate 2.2 roadster, great car, but not very quick and not very economical either !

Suggestions please guys (and gals)

Cheers

Quicker than a 2.2 won't be difficult :poke:

Economy is all down to the weight of your right foot more than anything else. I did a recent road trip around europe in my 3.0 with the roof down the whole time and averaged 40mpg but on the 14 mile drag to work, some times the economy was down in the low to mid 20's if I was hoofing it all the time.

I've just moved from a Z4 and Mondeo to a 3 series convertible - great car and it suits my needs (four seats and convertible).

Without a budget figure that you have in mind, it's difficult to know what to suggest really.

budget would be upto about 10k plus the part ex of mine (guessing around 5k) so 15k ish.
mine gets approx 35mpg on the motorway, and that is doing a very steady 80mph

part ex on yours might not be £5k - suggest you check that. try one of the car buying service as that will give you a guide price that you might get from a dealer.

anyway, a quick search of BMW found this

Faster and more economical, 10 - 15k ish.

That will get you a leggy 335d, which is plenty quick enough and if you're light of right foot economical to.

Or if you were going outside the BMW fold maybe a VW TDI.

I doubt you'll find an E93 Diesel with your budget but I could be wrong.

I take that back....

thats a very nice car for 15 grand, cheers for the link
jakethecat: ive been offered 6 grand for it by 3 different dealers, that was approx 2 months ago, so im guessing would be less now, hence why i said 5

a very good friend of mine has one of those M3's, correct its stupidly fast, but its a money pit, for what it cost to buy, fuel and service, he prob could of bought a similar year z4, and then had enough for another z4

ahem...

As an S54 engine runner I can say that as long as you use it sensibly and keep the mileage down its not that bad to run, if you plan on using any M car as a daily runner, then yep big bills will be yours.

Weekend toy it won't break the bank on servicing, tires and fuel.

But as you stipulated faster and more economical, the only way you'll do that is with derv I'm afraid.

330d or 123d if you can get either. The 335d is fast but economical it ain't even with a touch like a fairy. I've been on e90post for some years and I've never heard any get close 35 ACTUAL mpg unless on a long non stop cruise.

In saying all this. My money would go on an Alpina B3 biturbo. That's if something that looks a bit reppy floats your boat.

once a week i do a very long motorway journey that uses about a tank of fuel, the other days are just my commute to the office (less than 10 miles)

Try a 335D coupe. Quicker than the zed, and will get you over 40mpg. I had a 330D coupe which was a great drive with 45mpg, and now have a 535D (2009) in addition to my zed, which is the same twin turbo engine as the 335D but obviously heavier. And I have to say, not as nice to drive as the 3 series.

I get a real 42.8 mpg average in the 535D, but this will depend on your driving style and route. If you really need economy, go for the 330D - still a great driver's car. Coupe and M-Sport, of course! Should get a really nice 330D or 335D for £15k.

Forget 0-60 times, the beauty of these 300BHP diesels is the mid-range. PLant you foot at 50mph and they take-off. Note that the 335D only comes in auto, but the standard paddle-shift is nice, especially in sport manual mode.
