News - All of it bad

Hi all,

Wasn't sure of how to title this one. What have you done to your Zed today?, Wrecked "m"?

Anyhow had to let you all know that last week on my way home from work while overtaking three cars on a straight the second car in the line up sideswiped me putting me into a skid which resulted in me swerving in front of all the cars and leaving the road. I had almost got it back but the end result was that I hit three cairns at the side of the road before rejoining the road.

While I was trapped / waiting for an ambulance the car the car which hit me left the scene and while I have witnesses to what happened no one thought to take any vehicle details down so they have in effect disappeared.

This has left the Zed as a total write off and me being a very lucky lad to only have spent a few days in hospital. I had / have internal bleeding, bruising covering a good quarter of my body, four cracked vertebrae and ligament damage to my right knee.

I have had last week off work and am hopeful to go back later on this week and it could have been so much worse. The Zed did very well protecting me and a lot of the damage to me was actually done by the seat belt which is fairly common I believe. However without this and the cars inherit strength I may not be here now.

A few pictures below of the car as it sits. I have been offered 14k from the insurers which I think is okay really. I had reached 100k a few weeks ago. Let me know what you think of the offer.

Second zed to leave the road in the last month.. horrific.

Really glad you're OK and your wounds will heal, that's what's most important.
Very sorry to hear about this, wish you a swift recovery, both physically and mentally!

Wow I am glad you are ok OP that looks like a bit of a mess. Glad the car stood up did it’s job to protect you.

I’d push the insures for a little more if you can.

Valuation isn’t bad, but don’t know how prices of high mileage cars have progressed over the last couple of years.

One of the downsides of an M car on unforgiving OE suspension is its propensity to ‘snap’ on unplanned direction changes. Mine didn’t even need any contact to pirouette across 4 lanes of motorway, but I was lucky that I was only going 50mph in the rain and missed everyone else berore tapping the barrier.

My offer in early 2016 for a 150,000 mile coupe was £9500, plus another £4500 for mods - so a total of £14k. But mine was on the cusp of being written off. No arguments about the status of yours though.

BTW, do you still have access to the car? I’d love a spare battery box polystyrene tray & sunglasses holder :poke:

:o Looks like there were some pretty hard impacts there. Glad to hear you are on the mend.

In terms of insurance... NEVER accept their first offer. I speak from experience.

oh wow, that is some damage! glad you got away from it without anything super serious.

I'd say 14k is a little under for a 100k coupe, I'd push for 16k or so :)

Another Zed write-off :(
Glad you walked away - I see one member is already picking over the bones of your dead zed :|

Got to get in there quick, before the other vultures arrive :P

Crikey that does look bad, lucky as you say to walk away from that one without anything more serious.
Did I understand you correctly in that the middle car of the 3 also went for the overtake whilst you were mid manoeuvre and tagged you?
It always makes me slightly cringe when attempting the same as I am well aware there may be a total knob head who doesn't look in the rear view before going for the overtake. Sorry to see it appears you've fallen foul of exactly that, not a lot you can do in that situation :(
Best of luck with your recuperation and hope to see you in another M soon enough

Very sad, glad you're OK! really puts things in perspective doesn't it.

Just went through this with my C63, albeit less injury to us!

WRT the insurance valuation - did a valuer call you to discuss the value? (usually a guy acting on behalf of the company).

It's not a bad price, but you can usually argue it up a little. I had a pretty frank convo with the valuer from mine, and provided a few examples to price mine against (plus it's a future classic, it wont follow the usual glass/parkers valuation that closely - though they'll argue at your mileage it does). They have incentive to solve the problem ASAP, and avoid AMC's and rental cars etc - so being to the point and blunt about expectations and treating them like a used car salesman seems to work.

Hi Rich. I am fine and all the injuries will heal. Will see you again I am sure. I am sure I was more shocked :D

TomK- You have the scenario correct. I was alongside when I saw him start to move over and he clipped my rear quarter putting me in a skid. It was quite a belt :(

Tony- Car has been moved from the local compound as the insurers were being charged rent there. Think it's down near Manchester now. Sorry.

Shocking story :o Your injuries don’t exactly sound superficial so for you to be talking about a return to work later this week suggests you’re as tough as the Zed proved to be!

Hope you can improve on the insurance offer and put the whole episode behind you soon.

Yikes that looks a bad one  as said it could have ended a whole lot worse :(
Re the value offered ? I would simply ask them to give you a choice of 2 similar cars to choose from for that money & when they can't show them 2/3 MCs at £17k or more then try for at least £16k if not £17k

That one's fecked Gary. Very glad to read that you are not. :) Some rest and some physio and you'll be back walking in those mountains before you know it. The rest is just money. It really ain't as important.

I'm sure you were/are Gary! I'm totally gutted for you but glad the injuries aren't too serious!

Wow....that's horrible, glad you're on the mend, but weirdly comforting to know the cars can take a whack and protect us all!

Will you be looking to buy straight back into another MC...?

Could you negotiate £16k and the car back? The insurers probably won't realise the seats are worth a grand along with the other bits that are still sellable.

Was this the C63 you just bought a couple of weeks ago? What happened there?
