If any of you guys are interested in the armed forces I thought I'd share this great photo taken very recently in Portsmouth harbour. HMS Prince of Wales & HMS Victory. My brother is an ex matlow, he served on HMS Invincible which has now been scrapped. I actually got to steer it out on the Solent during a family day shortly after she was commissioned :driving: . How cool is that 8).
Cracking shot this one imo.
For info Victory weighs 3556 tons, length 65m , Prince of Wales is a shade under 64000 tons, length 280m

Nice pic.

Did you get a look at the Mary Rose? I watched them bring her home after the salvage. Not an RN ship I know, but older than Victory by some years.

Yes, I went round the exhibition but some years ago now, really interesting. I've also been aboard Victory & did a tour on a sub. Vanguard class I think it was but I can't remember the name. I'd love to get down there again & see them all again tbh.

Great photo. Very envious, I love stuff like this. If you ever get the chance you should visit the Vasa Museet (Museum) in Stockholm and take a look at the Swedish warship Vasa that sunk there in the harbour on its maiden voyage in 1628. It was recovered in 1961 then restored and reassembled. I've been a couple of times and it is simply staggering, it looks just like a brand new ship waiting for paint...not one that spent 333 years in the mud at the bottom of the Baltic Sea ! :o

Wow, that looks fantastic, though a bit like something out of Pirates from the Caribbean tbh :D . The one thing with HMS Victory is that she is still commissioned & could, in theory, be sent back to sea. It'll never happen of course but that's why there's never been an HMS Victory since.

Great photo OP.

I've visited HMS Victory (albeit many years ago) but find anything like that fascinating - it's hard to comprehend how dreadful the conditions must have been.

I went aboard HMS Belfast back in the 70s as well - for some reason someone decided it would be a good venue for a racing car show! :o

Although it's not a naval ship, the weirdest one is probably having toured both Mayflower replicas - in Plymouth Devon and Plymouth Massachusetts.

Some cracking photos
Portsmouth harbour is on my list to visit.
The Stockholm pics look amazing!

I had a tour of a Submarine many years ago - an 'O' class boat HMS Osirus
I reckon it takes a special sort of bloke to serve in subs!!!

You're not wrong!! All Navy newbies are asked if they want to 'volunteer' for subs during their training. They get a bung & extra wages if they sign up. I don't think it would ever be enough to tempt me  .

That Stockholm ship is amazing, some beautiful detail on her :)
Yes indeed, very beautiful. There's a 1:10 scale model alongside showing how it looked the day it capsized fully painted and gilt, under full sail with banner and flags flying. Just amazing :D 20191124_222237.jpg

I saw a you tube prog on the Vasa only recently, never new it existed and was shocked at its amazing condition. Pleased to see they have restored it sympathetically, it reminds me of American rat rod cars with their amazing patination... Personally I love the rough look of the old American trucks and cars in preference to the over restored ones...
