My last BMW was 1995-1998, 318iS coupe; nicely balanced compnay car, and reasonably swift for the time.
These days, my company runs (pays all expenses) on my nominated (owned) company car.
Recent cars have been: Honda Accord Type-R; immensely capable machine, with 0-60 in around 6.1s and sublime handling (mechanical LSD, for example). Next was 2002 MB SLK 230 - with the boys leaving home, could revert to 2 -seater; swift with great feel-good factor. Was very sorry to see it go; bought by MB specialist for his son, who texted me 48-hours later saying the car was perfect (it was in very fine conditon; I was 3rd owner with FMBSH).
I looked at later 2008 replacement SLK200 at a garage, but the engine was raucous and lacking in torque; cabin felt cheap; drove home in my 'old' car and though so much better.
But same garage had Z4 Coupe 3.0Si, and I thought it was very good looking, felt very stable on the road, and the performance verged on the insane. But was expensive with derisory offer on current SLK. But within 24 hours had bought a black 2007 Z4C 3.0Si privately(!) Sold the SLK before the end of the week; not a bad 7 days in terms of motoring. I'm the 3rd owner after son and father. Spent £6K less than would have done at garage with trade-in, which feels good too.
Have done 2K miles in last 6 weeks, commuting from home in Worcestershire to job in Bournemouth on weekly basis, mostly in the dark. Love the car! Makes the bosses new Prius Electric look like cheap mobile white goods on 4 wheels.
Any negatives? Wish the car was a little less wide... overtaking on narrow main roads through Wiltshire and Dorset is a challenge. Plus it needs the cruise control upgrade. But that's it.
My other car is a KSeries engined MG Midget, owned since 1977; it has 154 bhp under the bonnet (instead of around 60...), and 700Kgs so the 0-60 is not much slower than the Z4; a completely different car and a brilliant Q-machine. My wife has a 2007 Golf

BTW - I orginally thought about a Cayman, then I googled Porsche Engine Problems (as you do), and all thoughts evaporated with the unfolding content...
