Newbie

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum and a prospective Z4 owner.

I have about 9k to spend and am looking at a slightly older 2.5l z4.

Just looking for any tips or things to look out for.

Oh and as I'm only 20 any tips for insuring the car would be great as that's the main stumbling block at the moment.

Thanks

welcome- good luck with the search- ull be lucky with ur budget- maybe up it a lil for the right car

thanks for your help...that's where i'd been looking but with no previous experience of z4's I was wondering what the general problems I should look out for are?

I think I may have to wait a few months till i'm 21 as when looking on comparison sites it took the insurance down from around £1700 (as a named driver with my girlfriend as the main driver) down to £950.

That would allow me to spend a little bit more and hopefully get a better car for my money.

Yeah, you really need to be 21 for a car like the Z4. I had a similar thing a year or two ago. I stuck with my Fiesta 1.4D until I was 22 actually, and then bought an RX-8!

You'll see a noticeable gap between the quotes for the 17-20, 21-25 and 25+ brackets. Also, it'd give you more time to save - another grand and you can have a nice 03 3 litre version! :D. This could be insurable depending on your job, post code and NCB level. I'm 23, a teacher, in a 'B' category post code, on a 3 litre, with 2 years NCB, and I pay £1,050 per year.

Oh, and Admiral/Elephant are always the cheapest for young drivers in sporty cars. They were (by a mile) for my RX-8, and they certainly are for my Z4.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help Spud.

I live in Aberdeen, you wouldnt happen to have a link to let me know what category that I live in?

With regards to occupation, I'm on a 18month work placement with an Oil Company but I'll be going back to Uni next year. For the purpose of the insurance i'll be putting the job i'm doing at the moment down as it's got to be better than student.

I've got an 03 Fiesta at the moment and I would be keeping that and sharing the Z4 with my girlfriend. She's over 25 so by putting her as the main driver i'm hoping to save some money...I'm also with admiral for my fiesta so could hopefully get a multicar discount.

Thanks again for your help.

Putting someone else as a main driver if it's your car is fronting. Might want to be careful about that. And you won't build up any NCB if the policy is in your name, which is vital in your early 20s.

http://www.motorcarinsuranceuk.co.uk/post-code-ratings.php - check your post code on that. On an average car for a young driver the difference between a good post code and a bad one, with nothing else changing, can often be £500.

Key things to do:

- get your NCB built up
- make your job sound as good as possible. If you can legitimately call yourself an engineer, for example, then do it, rather than leaving it as 'technician', or something
- make sure it's in your name
- think carefully about your annual mileage. Make sure it's at the lower end of a realistic bracket of within a couple of thousand.
- definitely try and get the multicar discount. If you get this it'll help to offset the increase in premium by having you as the main driver - something which you need

thanks for that site spud.

Turns out I live in an A ranked area so that's good news.

My plan was to keep the fiesta (with me insured as the main driver collecting ncb, adding my gf as a named driver on that) and then do the opposite with the z4 as this would appear to be the cheapest option.

I'm just shocked at how much difference age and sex matter compared to experience. I've been driving three years and was being quoted around £2000 for the z4 but for my gf who's 27 (but not even passed her test yet) it would have been £600 (this is with 0months since passed test etc).

Thanks again for all the help though.

No probs. It's still technically fronting, but it's not as brazen as the way some people do it. Good luck!

Welcome to the forum.

I got my 3.0si Z4 when i was 20 ;) I know i'm female but i'd had my licence less than 2 years at the time so only had 1year ncb. I'm the main driver of the policy but i put my Dad as a named driver which brought it down a lot. Try doing it that way. My Dad's never even drove it

hi thanks for the welcome...

i've got my mum on my current insurance policy as a named driver and it took down by around £400, definately something i'll try.

thanks again

I always put my mum on my polices, but I don't think she would actually dare drive it, even though i've said she could use it for work lol. (Because I want to use hers when the winter comes around!)

Good look finding one fella, 1700 quid is a lot to be just a named driver, i'd hang on a bit.

I re entered the form and set my birthday to a day and year before todays date...making me just 21...took it down to £1000...

I can hold on till march? i think?
