Bought my first Z4 today, a 3.0si Coupe. Just checking in to say what a useful resource this is already.

That is all for now. Off to find out why it now won’t start!

Welcome to the forum George - a Coupe is the right choice!

We like to see photos of new members' cars so it would be great to see yours.

And good luck getting it started.

Finally, here’s a pic of my car.
It’s developed a starting issue on the first day of ownership. The engine takes several attempts to start, but at first shows very few signs of life, and doesn’t turn over. Then on about the 5th or 6th (or 7th!) attempt it fires and runs beautifully. It’s got steadily worse thought the day. Battery is 2 years old, car has done 65k, good service history. Obvious things could be starter motor or ignition switch perhaps? Any other ideas? Much obliged.

Your car looks great on those MV1 wheels, is it Carbon Black?

The only other thing I can think of is the starter motor solenoid, but the ignition switch does seem to be a common problem on Z4s.

I'm assuming you bought privately otherwise you'd just go back to the dealer for him to fix! Anyway I hope you can get it sorted.

Welcome to the forum. :) Great looks machine. 8)

Not the perfect start to life with your Zed though. :exitright:

It is indeed Carbon Black which has a blue tinge to it especially in bright sunlight.
Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll research each and see which one sounds most like my issue. Bought it privately and seller says he never had any issue starting it during his ownership. Just my luck.

Welcome George. Great colour for a Z4.
Rare to see MV1’s on a Z4. Do you plan to keep them or change them?

Hope you get your starting issue sorted.

Welcome, I’m in Bitton, Bristol.... so only about half an hour from you.

Great colour Carbon Black 8)

Best of luck resolving your starting issue

Thanks, I'm going after a new ignition switch first as it's the cheapest / easiest low-risk / high-gain route to begin with. Think I'll go with one of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323963815291

I"ll keep the MV1s for now, but keen to get rid of the budget run-flats currently fitted  so have another set of OEM rims in mind which I'll share once I have a reliable starter! Tried it this morning and it started on the 3rd go.

Thanks very much. It's a great forum. You're very local indeed... I bought the car from an ex-England cricketer who lives in Clifton.

Hi George

Joel here also living in Frome! I tried to send you message, good to see another Z4 so local. Give me a shout if you had any questions about yours.

Drop your car off at Linwood motors as they will be able to sort it in a flash, they are great guys. Sounds like it could be spark plugs or starter motor.

So took the car to Linwood and they diagnosed my car with a faulty starter motor. A new one was swiftly fitted and my starting issue is resolved! Thanks for the tip, Joel.

I also booked the car in for a service at Emtech in Salisbury - as I’m keen to have a specialist service history. Another good garage, with some good advice thrown in too. The drive there over Salisbury Plaim wasn’t bad either 8)

Next up, I’m planning to have the heavily corroded manifold bolts replaced and a set of new front brake lines. After that, wheels and tyres. Here’s a new shot of the car.
