Newbie - Z4 or SLK or Cayman ?

I think the E89 has aged badly in the looks department (in my opinion) , it is in desperate need of modernisation hence it was one of the worse selling cars of 2014. If you sat in a new one then sat in a new slk you would instantly see what I mean about 'a superior product' . I am sure when and if a new Z4 arrives it will be a massive leap forward. Obviously looks are subjective but I think the SLK in aggressive and shouty AMG styling looks amazing whereas the Z4 just looks meh...
I totally agree that if you want that true sports car feeling get the Cayman.... Or any E86

I like to bash BMW's convertible strategy, but in this particular case I like to point out that the e89 is a very old model.

Roadsters of all manufacturers tend to sell much more in the early model years. They are very fashion based. Mercedes has the same thing going on. I have just seen SL55 numbers, it is terrible. The moment they improved all the nitpicks in the care they didn't sell anymore, as a result most used ones on the market today are from the first production year.

That's the point I am making Squiddle. The E89 looks and feels like yesterdays model and is why it way behind the younger SLK in terms of quality and design. The new Z4 (if they don't drop it) should leave the SLK behind in sales. But as for now the SLK is definitely the better choice out of the two. Just compare sales figures, people aren't buy the Z4.

Who gives a flying f**k about sales figures; you can't judge how good a car is based on that because then you would be saying that a Fiesta>Gallardo. For me I think the opposite, the fact that I see so few Z4s around was one of the reasons why I chose a Z4. Actually the car I was seriously considering was the Audi A5 cabriolet but there are just too many white Audis everywhere it's generic as f**k. My dad always said that "the general public is wrong 80 percent of the time".

The SLK looks like it was designed by somebody who only knew how to operate a ruler :fuelfire:

Sports cars should be curvy

And have a big petrol engine :D

ps a year ago I would have said they had to have a manual transmission but the DCT has changed that for me

pps OP Get a Cayman if you can :driving:

Let's be honest here fellas , either car in any trim or form will be nothing but a dream to probably shed loads of people !

The SLK (we're talking about the latest model) looks good and it was something I considered as well myself. The problem I had was that it looks very 'Transformer'-ish but in a bad way and the knowing that the most common driver was a 40+ year old lady which gives it a feminine look even though it probably wouldn't have it otherwise.

I disagree about the 'curves' that you mention, whatever that means. R8 or a gallardo aren't exactly curvy are they. I think you mean fun-looking, SLK DOES NOT look like a fun car to drive but rather a car that was redesigned from a different model (i.e. proportions, front design and etc all like out of whack and slapped on from other cars).

Anyone can afford either car, it's just a matter of not being a dumb lazy f**k. This is coming from a 26 year old that worked his butt off immediately after uni to buy the e89 I posted above.

I think the facts would show otherwise - not everbody is capable of a university place nor of earning a good salary . Life is just not that simple. Some folk have ordinary and low paid jobs.

Perhaps you should consider yourself fortunate you have the intellectual ability to (I assume ) achieve a degree.

I stand by my original comment that either car would be nothing more than a dream to most.

I would agree Ronk, these cars would be a dream for alot of people however I'm amazed sometimes what the younger generation can afford which I think is called easy finance that just wasn't available on cars when I was in my early twenties.

Tim.

Agreed...

Paying £xxx a month doesn't mean you can "afford" the car..

I think to say "anyone"'can afford a £20,000+ car is narrow minded and insulting..

I'm very cynical about people who appear to have lots of things and people perceive them as affluent but don't look at what debt may lay behind it

"You can't judge how good a car is by sales figures"? Ha ha really? So two equally priced cars aimed at the same segment of buyers, one is selling very well while one isnt, has nothing to do with one being a better product? You are using some very strange logic. I am in the lucky position of being able to buy either car new and out-right so super low finance deals were not a factor in my choice of car. The mercedes was a better car than the BMW. Fact.. :fuelfire:

2 seater cars are never going to be big sellers really as they are not practical for the average family.
As for anybody affording either cars, not everybody is as lucky as you are Imported, in your 20s and can splash £20k on a car. I take it you still stay with your parents?
I have been working since I left school at 16, never been out of work, got myself a flat at 19 and only 2 years ago felt that we could afford to spend that amount of money on a car.
I dont think of myself as a dumb, lazy f**k.

Ha ha Fair point..but I like you guys :-)
I still think the E86 is one of the most beautiful looking cars out there and if it hadn't been for my accident I would never have sold mine.
But the E89...
