Newbie York WTB E89

Hello,

Just registered, Rick & Claire from York. Claire is looking for a car but doesn't really use forums so it falls to me.

I've previously had a E46 M3 but currently in a Lotus Elise 111R. Claire has had a couple of MX-5's which have been great but now she fancies something a bit more premium.

Considering a couple of cars but it's quite likely we'll go for a Z4. Started looking at 06-08 cars but now think and early E89 is possible. More depreciation but I'd much prefer the hardtop roof over the fabric style. Fabric looks nice and we had it on the MK2 Mazda but next door cats loved it too and would regularly find evidence of them using it as a bed

Not done much viewing yet, doesn't seem to be that many cars around, these parts anyway. we were at Sytners Leicester on Mon and had a sit in a 2011 car. Had £18500 on the windscreen but sales advised it was actually only up for £15500  Still over the odds for us but reminded me why I usually avoid main dealers!

Budget is around £11-12K. Our milage is minimal so not too concerned about running costs. Likely to go for the Z4 as I'm expecting it to be as reliable as my M3 i.e faultless. Couple of good indy's close by for servicing regardless. Def want a 6 pot & leather. Not sure what else we'll get with that budget. Any advice on options would be appreciated. Likewise I don't know of any Specialist sales places for Z4/BMW in Yorks or the North so if there is someone, please let me know.

Going through to Coopers York this morning unannounced. Hopefully be able to get out in one of the cars they have there. Nothing in budget but Coopers do have a Car in Sunderland that could be an option so they might be open to talking.

Cheers

Rick

Plenty of cars if you get out and about in the surrounding areas...
Obviously the budget restricts many E89's but I'm sure you will get sorted

Is the one at Sunderland a black 23i?

Do you know it? Just realised it does not have leather.

Hello, welcome to the forum and good luck with the search. Having owned both the e85 and the e89, I would not be to hasty in rejecting the former, yes both are great cars, its that with your budget, the e89's will be fairly low spec. In my opinion things that are a must for the e89 is the Sport seats and the upgraded stereo, which neither of mine had and ultimately the main reasons for selling early, back ache and the inability to listen to music with the top down at speed being the reasons.

Going for an e85 means a 3.0 Si Msport with lot's of toys, it is much more of a sports car than the e89 which is more of a GT (widely differing views on here about that, but that's my opinion). Oh and whichever one you buy, ditch the run flats as soon as you can....happy hunting

Well Coopers York very pleasant. Had to do the normal chit chat as I would expect at a main dealer but they've kindly give us a 65 plate 1.8? for the day. I think it's the 2.0 turbo model.

Claire very impressed and in love, which is of course why they do it. Have reminded her its ex demonstrator so will have lots of extra her's probably won't. Can see the budget going North after today :-o

Quick question. Is it worth trying to get a automatic? Much benefit to the drive? If you had to choose between Approved Used Manual or private/trader auto which would you go for?

Thanks

If it's going to be the wife's car she might like the Auto. For me it has to be the manual and a six pot

Cat's you have got to love them. Welcome aboard. It sounds like you know what you want. The Z4 E85-86 are certainly proving reliable, in the main. I can't really comment on the E89.

Lovely selection of metal in the photo's, clearly a couple of petrol heads. :driving: Enjoy the search for your new wheels.

Sars listening to the Nolans with the roof down......I can only imagine....

No don't know that one sorry.
We part exchanged a black 23i there a couple of months ago for a newer beast.
Would go for a six cylinder all day long. To get the best from the engine you need to use all the revs, but the sound of that straight six is heaven, as for the gear box, ours was a manual and I loved it (only ever driven manuals), but now I have a DCT and as my daily it's great in town traffic and still fun on the open road.
Good luck with the search.

Bought my first Zed 25i from Coopers of Sunderland and managed to get a good deal but the after sales was awful. Being in York I suspect you would not be bothered abouit the after sales.

Would be very surprised if there isn't ac ar for you somewhere on the forum, if not there are some very knowledgable guys and gals son hear so someone will point in the right direction

Good hunting

Decided we would really like an iDrive car. doesn't seem to be many about but I think it's definitely a feature worth having.

Coopers have been very helpful, Sytners okay but only a brief visit. Seeing Stratstone tomorrow who seem more like a supermarket but seem to have the most stock. Contacted Marshall today who I can't say i was overly impressed by, shame as they has two cracking cars advertised.

Have you had a look at the BMW UK web site on the used car pages. Just select a few options and it will find you which dealers in the UK have that model. I picked up mine that way from a London garage. They sent me photos and a video and after a lot of negotiating and a small deposit they held it for me till I went down. Don't just stick to the North East.

As for your choice of model, must agree that unless you can afford the 28i which is a 4 cylinder but with 2 twin turbos, go for the six pot every time. As for the maual or auto, unless you get the DCT auto, stick with the manual.

Well we picked up a car today.

2010 3.0 car white with Black Leather. M Sport Spec, Auto and Nav.

Quite a bit over budget but these things always seem to go that way. Very pleased with it so far. Parked off road for the next few dasy until we can sort insurance. Was looking at Henderson Taylor as they do some good agreed value policies for the Lotus, hoping they'll mirror.
Anybody got anybody else worth speaking to that offer specialist policies?
