newbie with question for you all

Does it have leather heated seats, sat nav etc?

Either way its very high mileage for its age and there are bound to be problems sooner than later (infact this might have the highest mileage from all the cars we have on here?)

On the upside is has full service history (i would double check this with BMW along with the prep check list that can be found under the newbie section?) do you know how many owners the car has had? and if a large percentage were motorway miles?

But personally i would go for lower mileage car , maybe a 2.0 with lower mileage to suit your budget.

Seems cheap enough and should still have plenty of life left in it. Only downside is that if something does go wrong then it could end up costing - no surprise there though.

If its 8 1/2 out of 10 with all the bits you need, its down to whether or not you feel its worth your hard earned sterling's. Its pretty high mileage yes, but if you're not too worried and its been properly serviced etc (triple check all of this), then it might be prudent to spend a little money on an AA inspection just to put your mind at ease.

...or as Ranski says, take another look around and spend a little bit more for a lot more return. Prices seem to have dipped recently and you could find yourself a bargain for about £7/8k - which may save you spending £2-3k on a high mileage car that needs varying amounts of TLC.

Plus I'd always try and factor in resale value, so a lower mileage motor may suddenly become more tempting.

Ultimately of course, the choice is yours!

Good luck and keep us all posted.

lol thats true are they expensive to maintain

Not overly so but that car would have been the thick end of £30k new so as long as you bear in mind £30k running costs rather than £6k running costs you'll be fine.

V.O.M, pre purchase checklist in my signature - whatever you decide to go for it may be useful. As for high mileage vehicle lots of things to consider with wear and tear BUT how many owners? Lots of owners (3/4 plus...) then I would stear clear as each has a driving style which causes particular wear characteristics - lots of drivers lots of different wear. 1.2 owners and it might be a reasonable buy but get it checked thoroughly.

AND Welcome to the Form

Thanks alan i guess the reality is i may be living in dream world as i love these cars and i think with this kind of miles on or a catd is realistically the only way i can afford one as a 2nd(fun) car,it has 2 owners in total.

141,000 miles / 8years = 17625 per year = not so very high mileage for a BMW (tho maybe for a sports car) ??

VOM - you can live in that dream world, the choice is yours man.
(My elder brother is driving a 1998 316i coupe with 150k odd miles on the clock, 3 previous owners. Its mint and drives beautifully)

If you don't know much about cars, take an AA vehicle inspector with you to check it out. As long as its ok then I say go for it.

Bear in mind that it may be difficult to shift when you come to sell it, many people are put off by cars with over 100k, even though they are known to last a lot longer than that.

If you do go and check it out, one thing I would definitely check is the oil. If you see any white creamy substance ( :o get your mind out of the gutter :o ), steer well clear as it may have a blown gasket. Look at alanJ's sig for more useful info.
