newbie with engine light on ???? help needed

hi all
im a newbie to z4s and need help
i have a 2.0 e85
and the engine sevice light has come on!!
not the eml
it drives fine but light wont go out
it came on about 200 miles ago i pulled over turned it of and the light went out
come home from work this evening and the light come back on!!
ive had a good look on the forum and there is a lot of things from mas to supermarket fuel
any ideas as i need to use the car tomorrow
is it ok to use as i say it drives fine!!
help please!!

Do you have a photo of the dash display? It may just be telling you the service is over due. If that is the case it can be reset.

If you don't reset it it will continue to count down and then go into overdue service mode with a minus sign in the mileage to service display. Change the oil and filter then use the reset sequence to reset.
 
will this reset the engine yellow light on the display
like i said its saying its not due a service untill another 9300 miles
are they two separate things???
why would the engine light be on if the service indicator is still saying 9300 miles???

It’s counting down the days til the service is due, as a reminder to you :thumbsup:

Extract from Owners handbook
Service interval display
Remaining distance to next service
The displays shown in the illustration
appear for a few seconds when the ignition
key is in position 1 or after the engine is
started.
The next service due appears with the
message OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION,
together with the distance remaining in
miles – in kilometers in Canada – before the
next scheduled service.
The computer bases its calculations of the
remaining distance on the preceding driving
style.
A flashing message and a "–" in front of the
number mean that the service interval has
already been exceeded by the distance
shown on the display.
 
hi yes i know all that but its not due a service yet till 9300 miles
there is deffo no minus sign in front so its not overdue
the concern is why the engine light is iluminated on the tach???
 
A picture may help us diagnose whats going on
If it's the service light as you say, it goes off after a few seconds once engine is started
EML light would stay on
Can you scroll through the menus to see if anything else (other than service) is activating the warning.
Fluid levels, brakes etc

General rule is a yellow symbol is a warning, red, impending doom :wink:
Another thought, IIRC the service light works on milage OR date. (Stand to be corrected :) )
Have you checked the dates in the computer?

Hi, I think you really need to have the codes read as it could be anything, sensors, fuel cap, battery etc.
Where a bouts are you as someone on hear close by may be able to plug their reader in and let you know or go to your local BMW Indie and get them to read it.
 
Post a photo of your dash showing what light is illuminated so we can confirm what you are seeing. You did say it was not the EML light in your original post so we are all assuming its the Service reminder light.

hi first thing i've done is put bp 97 fuel in to replace the shitty Morrisons fuel my misses made me put in cause she had a voucher !!
then got the codes off main was cat sensor
so made a note
ive borrowed the fault code meter
deleted just done 20miles and clear!!!
could supermarket fuel do this???????
what do you guys and gals use??
and what won't you put in??

Lots of debate on the forum regarding which fuel to use, doubt thats going to throw up a code though.
For what its worth I used Sainsburys 95 Ron when I had my 3.0si (still do).
 
So it does sound like it was the EML not a service reminder?
Shame you couldn't upload a pic so we could have had more guidance to begin with.
However, fingers crossed it's gone for good.
 
I had a yellow engine light the other year - code reader gave a down stream lamda sensor not in heat range (or something like that). It wasn't fuel related octane/supplier but was related to the type of driving I had done.

No motorways here in Norfolk and although I'd driven it hard in some places I never got a long hot run - the solution was driving it to Manchester and back like I stole it. Cleared the code and after the long hot trip it never came back.

You can certainly get bad fuel and in can cause issues, however modern petrol is produced to good old EU standards, so all pretty similar. The supermarket for court is a better place to buy your fuel than many a local garage IMHO, simply due to the fact that they have a high turnover meaning the fuel is fresh. As for the octane value, your car should run perfectly well on 95 or 97.
