Newbie with E89 23i

Hey All, thought I'd introduce myself to the group, Im Rich and I have finally brought an E89.
I was intending on getting a s35i 2009 ish but I couldnt find one in the spec I wanted that ran OK so after about 500 miles in roadtrips, I got sick of it and then this little E89 23i 2009 come up, at least i got the soundtrack of the straight 6. :D

So far so good, although It does not have any extra toys I would have liked - I didnt even realise it needed them.

For example, my main criteria was Manual gearbox, parking sensors and heated seats. all sorted.
NOt owning a BMW before, seeing the phone button on the steering wheel and the BMW Professional radio I "assumed" it would come with bluetooth... It dont.

It also does not have the module that allows the roof to open and close via the remote control.
I first thought that it just needed the carly kit to program it, but apparently you may not have the module fitted.
How do I find out if its fitted and needs programming, or more likely missing.

Can the roof opening and bluetooth modules be retro fitted, or do I need to go down the aftermarket route?

Also thinking of a different exhaust to sound a little more throaty?

Any advice or thoughts?
Cheers

Hi and welcome to the forum Rich.

Any petrol straight 6 is a reason to go for a drive!

To find out exactly what spec your car has just put the VIN into one of these sites:- https://www.bing.com/search?q=bmw+decoder&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&ghc=1&pq=bmw+decoder&sc=4-11&sk=&cvid=4F6B32B5D9014539A3F96D789EEA4401

I've only owned E86s so don't know much about E89s but I'm sure someone will be along to help with your other questions.

Hi, in order for your roof to operate up & down on the remote you need to have comfort access fitted to your car, if it’s not got that (not many do) you need to purchase a 3rd party smarttop module which gives you the functionality you desire plus a few other things https://youtu.be/9YALWutM-Cc

thanks guys for your help. cant decide if its worth the £330 ish for the poser factor. Would be better spent on an exhaust upgrade :D

It’s not just pose value, the one touch capability is really useful when operating the roof and the lights suddenly change :o

Also have the smart top, the 'one touch' operation is also very handy.

Also I thought the general consensus, for UK cars anyway, is that all cars will OPEN using the remote (if enabled in Carly) but as stated you can only close with either comfort access or an alternative aftermarket module fitted (Smart Top or the cheaper one I can never remember).

wow, didnt realise you didnt have to hold the button down, that seriously gets on my nerves waiting.

these smart top boxes, are they a self fit easy job, or better installled?

Yes it bugged me too - first world problems.

Easy to fit, instructions provided are very good. Few bits of trim to remove, open bootlid to fit module, job done 30 mins tops.

Some people - me included - struggle to get the module seated correctly (ends up with a red flashing error light) but easy to solve just by removing the outer plastic cover from the inner plug - all covered in the instructions.
