Newbie with 35is needing help.

Hi everyone, I'm in the UK and have a modified bmw z4 e89

I have an ex press car 2010 35is which has developed an issue that's driving me mad trying to figure out what exactly it is.
When I was driving it went into limp mode saying the temp was off the clocks and boiled

Temp gauge was normal. Was running fine, fans where on flat out. But when u turn the car off the fans go straight off. When u start the car even when it's not been used for weeks the fans come straight on.
It runs fine for say 20/30mins then will say it's boiled again.

I did the water pump test and it's still circulating water.
Although it does sometimes sound like a cow in distress! So my friend says.

Plugged it in to diagnostics but the system either didn't find any issues or wasn't good enough.

I checked two sensors so far and they haven't changed anything. One top of engine and one under the water bottle.

From what I've read it could still be the water pump and thermostat. But I'd like to see if it could be anything else before throwing a good grand at the car to fix it..

I've exhausted Google and YouTube as can never seem to find exact engine etc. So hoping someone here may be able to help?

Sorry for long first post but I'm missing using the car and don't have a huge amount of spare money to throw at it.

Would add pic but not sure how too lol.

Thanks in advance and Hi 😬

Sounds like the electric water pump, symptoms certainly match, unfortunately a very common problem on these N-series engines. The part number you're after is 11519455978. OE Manufacture is Pierburg, you should be able to get a new pump (and replacement aluminium screws) for around the ~ÂŁ400 mark.

The temperature gauge is for the oil temperature not the water, it does sound like the water pump though, I’d suggest changing the pump and using new bolts, the thermostat and the pipe connecting the two together whilst you’ve got it off.

If you have an E89 your first tool you should buy is a decent diagnostic tool

Hi and welcome to the forum with your distinctive Z4.

Good luck getting your new water pump sorted. I believe it is a DIY job on the N52, but don't know about the N54 engine. Hopefully somebody will!

As your profile says your in Chesterfield try https://www.jwsdevelopments.co.uk/ at j29a of M1 or https://www.bmwman.co.uk/ near J26 M1, hope you get it sorted

It’s a diy job if you have double jointed elbows & fingers, it’s recommended to drop the subframe but possible without doing that.

If you enter your car details in the website it tells you the correct parts.

would this be the correct one?

It looks correct and list’s the 35i/is in the comparable vehicles.
I ordered the pierburg pump from AUTODOC which is oem fitting E88E4D5A-34D2-4130-ABAD-4969B93DD694.png

While you are in there it’s worth while changing the thermostat and the connecting hose between them
