Newbie Questions

Hi all

First of all I want to mention what an awesome place this is. I registered here and the next day purchased a 2003 2.5 SMG from this forum!

I have a few questions and am in the need of an education in the ways of Zed's.

1, Drivers side window regulator is broken which means the window can go down with a little help. Up is fine. The chap i purchased this off said he was quoted £200 to get this fixed. Obviously this was factored into the price at time of sale. Does this seem like the right price?
2, There is a little vibration that starts at *ahem* 80mph. Could this be tracking or wheel weights?
3, the alarm goes off sometimes. This maybe due to the window not being put up properly. Is there a way of changing the alarm sensitivity?
4, When I unlock the car there is a 2-3 second sound of a mechanical type. It actually sounds like a CD loading in a CD player.......kinda :) - I am sure this is normal but I was just wondering what it is.
5, Last night after having a midnight drive (tired today at work) i parked up and heard an intermitent noise coming from under the car which sounded like a someone was blowing up the tyres.
6, I have only 1 key. Can BMW supply another? Approx cost?
7, I have full service history but no owners manual. Can these be purchased from BMW? Approx price?
8, I had a light come on my dash this morning briefly which looked like a battery. I dont have a manual to look this up though.
9, I have BMW Business CD with the 10 speakers. Is it possible to sort out Ipod/Iphone connection to this?

Sorry for all the questions but I am new to Zed's and new to BMW. A proper Newb!
Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks Danny

2, There is a little vibration that starts at *ahem* 80mph. Could this be tracking or wheel weights?

It would be my first stop. A badly balanced tyre or a bulge.

4, When I unlock the car there is a 2-3 second sound of a mechanical type. It actually sounds like a CD loading in a CD player.......kinda :) - I am sure this is normal but I was just wondering what it is.

Maybe the aircon flaps? They make some noise after you switch off the car.

5, Last night after having a midnight drive (tired today at work) i parked up and heard an intermitent noise coming from under the car which sounded like a someone was blowing up the tyres.

A jealous ex-girlfriend, I presume!

7, I have full service history but no owners manual. Can these be purchased from BMW? Approx price?

You can always download a pdf file free of charge, but if it's the paper you're after, I think you can look the part number up in the ETK http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/accessories/electronic-parts-catalogue/electronic-parts-catalogue.html

8, I had a light come on my dash this morning briefly which looked like a battery. I dont have a manual to look this up though.

BMW OEM batteries can last for ages, but if yours seems oldish, it's better to have it replaced before the winter. A weak battery can result in some electrical gremlins, as other posts have shown.

9. Aux cable can be installed - DIY guide here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=15087 or you can buy the cable and simply install it.

Just realised on point 5. Yep you are nearly right. The ex wife is in the boot.

8 - It is the add coolant light! Kind of looks like a battery :/ maybe........well at 7am on a Monday morning it does! Thanks for the headsup on the PDF owners manual.

'simply install it' Not for someone with 5 thumbs on each hand!
Great to know it is possible though. Thanks

Check the bonnet sensor, this if the most common fault.

4, When I unlock the car there is a 2-3 second sound of a mechanical type. It actually sounds like a CD loading in a CD player.......kinda :) - I am sure this is normal but I was just wondering what it is.

Fuel pump probably, or DVD drive if you have Nav, both common noises.

6, I have only 1 key. Can BMW supply another? Approx cost?

Yes, expensive.

7, I have full service history but no owners manual. Can these be purchased from BMW? Approx price?

Yes, about £30 from memory. you can download the PDF manual from the FAQ link. I would post it but can't find the FAQ section :headbang:

8, I had a light come on my dash this morning briefly which looked like a battery. I dont have a manual to look this up though.

See above

9, I have BMW Business CD with the 10 speakers. Is it possible to sort out Ipod/Iphone connection to this?

Lots of choices, Dension, Intravee, Dice and AUX. Have you got DSP, if so you will need a conveter and some options won't work.

4. Do you have Nav? I find my nav drives makes a noise when first unlocking the car... i guess its reading the map CD.
6. BMW can give you a new key... but wait for it... its about £175 and requires your V5 and ID as proof first. Think they are the only people.
7. Owners manual... BMW could supply... but prob be cheaper from a breakers or eBay. You could DL it if you are not interested in keeping in in the car... mine is never in my car anyway.

Would you believe it!
After using it all weekend and having no problems. The hood has packed up!
I have been using it all weekend as i said with hood and down.
BMW suggested i take it to an Indy. I think i will be giving this chap a call here
http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=41280&p=602144#p602144

I could actually cry :(

An Indy will fix the window for you - doesn't sound a bad price. You can also do it yourself, there are guides on here

Don't fret about the roof - common time of year for it as I have seen 10-15 threads on here in the last month and a half saying the same thing, including one started by me

Mine is still not fixed - I was going to try it myself but time / nerves have gotten the best of me so I shall be taking my car plus new roof motor and housing to my local Indy this Friday. Parts cost me about £340 from Sopers Lincoln, labour to fix will cost me £250 cash.

I just thought I would update to let people know what was wrong as i have had the majority of these issues fixed now.

1 - Window reg was fixed for £180 all in - genuine BMW parts.
2 - vibration was simply caused by the front wheels being worn. I have replaced them and its beautiful now at high speeds.
3 - The bonnet senser needed replacing - £15 for a new one and a non tool 30 seconds fix
4- Fuel pump
5 - No idea. Havent heard it since
6 - £120 for a new key from BMW - you need V5, drivers license and utility bills
7 - Purchased from Ebay for £20
8 - Dumbass! Coolant needed topping up.
9 - Parrot now installed at a cost of £180 including fitting.

My Cowl sensor broke in my hood causing my hood problems. This is to be fixed on Thursday. The part is cheap enough at £20 but the labour is 2.5 hours work. Autotech Telford will be doing this work for me.

And then hopefully happy motoring! :)

I guess it is worth mentioning that sometimes when the roof fails and the cursed flashing red lights appear on the roof controls, that is not always the roof motor that has failed. Any decent Indy with diag equipment should be able to identify the fault. It is all too easy to say that you need a new roof motor and charge you £600 for the pleasure.
