Newbie question (normal)

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum but I do have a question as per usual for all newbies haha!

The car has a full history, all documents and service book etc BAR the owners manual, the owner did say it had disappeared some years ago...

I am curious as to how the oil level indicator works on this car (2005 Z4 2.0i)
...at present after a couple of miles of driving the oil level indicator reads:
[][][][][]I OIL

thats the best I can do on the keyboard, each segment isn't encased the start "[" and end "]" is accurate but inbetween are simply horizontal lines or large equals... anyway is this reading OK? there appears to be a vertical line or 1 at the end of the segment (see above) and just says "oil" is this ok?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers
Chris

It's fine. if you watch it for a while it'll eventually say "OK" on the lower line. If the right vertical bar ever "fills", the oil level is too high. As the level drops, you'll see something like [][]---|. When the level gets a litre down, the lower line will read "LO" instead of OK. You also then get a brief amber oil warning when you shut off the engine.

I'm surprised you didn't find this in your searching, lot's of posts on this. :poke:

Speaking of searching, you might find a PDF download of a manual somewhere. Even if not for the same year or market, it's better than nothing.

welcome..... dont forget the pics, they love pics here and i dont mean the oil lights........

Hi guys,

A big thanks for the replies... I know I know  I should have searched a little harder lol!
From what I did find through a few searches it suggested it should display "OK" but at present it displays what I so artistically typed/illustrated in my first post but nothing more - no "OK" or no "LO" the illustration simply stays on the display for about 15 secs then disappears.

If I immediately request an oil measurement from cold it just says --- o (the "o" is a clock - good huh? haha)

So any thoughts on this... no OK's or LO's.

As for the pictures i'll pop a few online next week... I must admit, its a pleasure to drive.

Cheers once again for the replies.

Oil level check should be done at normal operating temperature. I guess the clock symbol is a type of "Try again later" message.

IIRC if you press that button when you switch the ignition on but before the miles to service info disappears it will tell you when your next brake fluid change is required. I know that's not what you're asking about here, but figured you might find it useful given the car is new to you.

Welcome to the forum

Thanks chaps for all info and advice, always appreciated. I've actually booked the car in for a service (2) plus plugs despite the history/car stating it doesn't require it - i thought i'd start as i mean to go on... a little pampering for the better half's car.

As for the OK's and LO's still none to date but the clock comment I think is spot on 'bcworkz'.

I miss the good old dip stick - stupid digital reading - crazy. Actually the day before yesterday I briefly saw the same as I illustrated above but with a - (minus symbol) before the "I" at the end of the [][][][][]I so it actually looked like [][][][][]-I

...it quickly returned to the original symbol.
