Newbie question - motorway RPM?

Evening all, after doing some research here (thank you!) I collected my Z today 06 3.0si, massively proud driving home on the M25 with the top down, sunny but 12degrees! 8)

Anyway, can anyone advise what kind of rpm the car should run at at 60-70mph in 6th? At 60-65 I was getting 2250rpm which seems to me high?

My other car is an Astra diesel with a very tall 6th gear so not exactly much of a benchmark.

Cheers

Sounds about right. It's fixed though so all Z4 3.0si will be the same, unless the clutch is slipping.

You can't compare different cars, especially diesel which revs lower than petrol. What you're seeing is normal.

Remember you've got a couple of thousand extra headroom on the revs compared to your Astra.
2250 rpm @ 60mph =
6000rpm @ 160mph
I "read on the internet somewhere" that the 3.0 engine design brief was to get to the 155mph limiter (on the Autobahn obviously  )

Sounds right. Your astra is diesel so will rev lower.

My old E46 was 3,500 rpm for 75mph ish. Zed is around 3k rpm for the same speed I reckon

Theoretically :D I would be at under 3000 rpm at 80 miles an hour in 6th. But only just ! I think I read somewhere.

The 3.0Si sits neatly at 3,000 RPM at 90 MPH, so the OPs figure is just right I believe.

Must be a blast going from a diesel to the 3.0si :driving:

Yes quite, the Astra is a company 1.7tdi Eco model - it's horrible and prompted me to get a weekend car - Switching into the Zed, sliding down into the M sport seats and firing up that gorgeous motor, wow I love the thing already just looking at it on my drive it's damn handsome, so many lovely details :D :D :D

Does the roadster have a different final drive to the coupe as my car is nearer 80 mph at 3000 rpm?

This has come up before and I have checked it, definitely 3,000 in 6th gear. Mine is an auto, but it shouldn't be any different as it's the same engine. Go test it :driving:

Actually I've just checked and the auto has different gear ratios to the manual which would explain the difference.
And it seems the final drive is different between the roadster and coupe too even in manual form.

Here's what I found, no idea exactly what it means because I'm a dumb arse but there are some differences.
