They made a a 2.2i auto but I don't think its anymore fuel efficient than the 3.0i.
My 3.0i auto has done 34mpg over 78 miles on an economy run using the fuel pump to measure rather than the on board computer. I had to drive like a Saint and never drove like that again.
The 3.0i and 3.0si manual cars seem to get closer to 40mpg on the motorway.

Agree with that. My coupe (manual 3.0Si) was very efficient, delivering 40+ with cruise set to 70 on the motorway. Mine will average 40mpg if i reset the trip and head up the motorway and keep the speed below 65ish.
I own a 05 with just over 200k miles purchased with around 190k. Third owner but it had an extensive maintenance history. It is not my daily so was fine with high mileage when bought. I did replace the springs and shocks just to make sure all was new. Bushings were already replaced with poly ones prior. Just as a matter of prevention changed oil, plugs, coils, and just did the clutch as starting to rattle. (Not bad 200k on original). Anyway, when testing these cars remember they are sport cars and will have a stiffer ride then say non sport cars. Also, if run flats are on the car it will also add to harsh ride etc. Last, I will also vote for the straight 6 mine still runs pulls strong. Good luck with the search.

i know bmw seem to have this thing where the number in the name meant the engine size, but for later cars the engines are bigger. i dont know what other bmw these engines are usually used in, but the 2ltr straight 6 i meant was the 150hp you had in the E36 and whatever the 5 series of that era is. that is Assuming they were even 2ltrs in the first place :lol: .. never driven a beemer, so i dont know how any of them perform, but regardless of model the idea would be to get a car more powerful than what i own. i did think of an auto vag with exact same 1.4 tsi i have, but that seemed pointless just for an auto box and maybe slightly better spec.
the car i use for work daily is a 22 plate kia sportage and it has the 1.6 turbo petrol engine and despite a bigger car with auto and 19" wheels it drives really well and pulls well(not the best auto, but only those slks and a range rover i have for comparison) and i think that engine puts out 156hp or something, so really 150hp is the minimum i am looking for, just obviously got to be decent with an auto. i guess from whats been said the 2.2 is the minimum to look for in the Zeds if not 2ltr has an auto. the mpg people are getting dont seem to bad and suppose what you'd expect really and without the obvious push, they do seem to not be too different to the book figures.
as for the harsh ride i expect it from a sports car really and while my scirocco is based on the mk5 golf and likely the normal every day ones aside from a few differences to make it different then while its very comfy and has nice sport seats it can be quite bouncy and harsh at times. probably not as bad, but still apparent.
