Newbie Niggles

Hi Guys and Girls,

Had my Z4 (3.0si) a couple of weeks now and have managed to get a few good runs out in the car over the first couple of weekends. A couple of niggles I'd really appreciate owners feedback on...

1/ Gearbox - Does anyone else find the box really stiff? I know the cold weather probably doesn't help but I'm still getting used to that. Also if I change gear with clutch down when the car is switched off the gearbox seems to make quite a racket doing the changes - normal?. I appreciate it is probably a pretty sturdy box to deal with the power but are they all that "industrial"? Just not used to it yet.

2/ When the car comes to a stop and I let it idle in neutral there is a faint slapping sound from the engine, any ideas? It's only got 20K on the clock so I wouldn't expect any clutch/gearbox issues but I guess you never know how it has been driven before.

3/ When I brake I get a faint clicking noise that sounds like it comes from the passenger footwell, somthing to do with ABS? Brakes seem to work well.

4/ Can anyone give me a ballpark idea for what a BMW dealer would charge to give the car a look over? I have a 3 month waranty with the dealer so had best make sure I find any problems before that's up!

Otherwise I have to say that the Z4 feels pretty solid, especially so for a convertible so still smiling!

Thanks in advance for any feedback

- does it go quiet when you press the clutch down? - if so, it's common and my last two 3.0si s have done it. I think it's the idler shaft rattling - mine did it from about 3000 miles. It went on to to 95,000 with no issue.

Rgds.

Hi Zed Five,

Yes it does generally stop when you press the clutch down, good to know it's nothing to worry about. Thats one less worry.

Thanks

1/ the gearbox is known to be less than slick, the CDV doesnt help and alot of people remove it.

Excuse ignorance but whats the CDV?

Clutch Delay Valve... a small device designed to stop you dumping loads of power/torque on the clutch...

makes you drive like a kangaroo if you are not careful!

check out here: Zechausen

Ive managed to learn to drive around it but still get it wrong sometimes

Never fails to amuse me that ! Its a sports car and they inhibit fast gear changes with the cdv. Why on earth did nt they build the the transmission that was up to the job of "sports car" treatment in the first place, I mean there are plenty of other cars that are nt impeded by a cdv

it doesnt have any CDV deletion thing for 2.0..

guessing the 2.0 has one fitted?
or is it just another thing which makes driving a 2.0 even more of a challenge

My last Z4 did that also. 3.0si Coupe. No problems while I had it.

A lot of these fellas remove the CDV, I have no trouble with it at all. Just adjusted my driving style a bit. Don't want any warranty service to be denied due to "mods". Not that big of a deal.

The transmission IS very "precise" and solid. When I shift gears in a parking deck, I can hear all kinds of solid sounding clicks as I move the shifter into place. Just part of it.

My car also has the gear rattle--there are two counter-rotating shafts in the transmission that are very close together. When you're at idle, in neutral, clutch engaged, they rattle around a bit. I told my service adviser about it, and he says his E46 M3 does the same thing--not to worry.

The clutch clatter is normal, mine dose it, Had a new gear box, clutch and release bearing and it still dose it. After the dealer replaced all this they said its normal.
