A few simple things to check.

Check around the valve cover for oil leaks. Especially the lower half. DIY is around $75.

Apart from 35i / 35is where fitment was quite common variable rate dampers were hardly fitted to any other models..

MSport variants had lower springs with revised normal dampers...obviously a lot more common..

Adaptive dampers were standard fitment on the 35is

I assume you have done an MOT history check? You can tell a lot from those as to how the car has been used through its life. I've got a HPI check code you can use, which will also bring the MOT details in. I bought 5 codes but only used 2 before I found my Z4. PM if you want it

Thats your vin decode.. looks well specced

Welcome to the forum OP.

I've had two E86s and two 3 Series with the N52 engine and been very pleased with them all, both in terms of how well they drive and reliability.

Having said that 2 of them had the electric water pump die requiring replacement. It will happen at some point, but when it happens is pretty random. My first E86 needed a new one at 60K miles but my 2nd was on the original when I sold it on 91K. It's only an issue because when it stops the car overheats in less than a mile, and new pumps aren't cheap (over £200 for an OE Pierburg pump).

Anyway happy hunting, and let us know how you get on!
