Hi Everyone,

Having just purchased a Z4 3.0 (fitted with Xenons) a have a problem. One of the lights is fogged up (passenger side) (tried to be repaired by the previous owner and made it worse) and the other light units dipped beam is not working (driver side)....

soooo.....

I'm wondering what is the best way of going about sorting this and as I like these

I wondered if either a: They'll work but obviously I'll be downgrading to halogens and b: if anyone has tried the HID/Xenon version of these which I've seen they have in the states.

I know there are many many threads on this but can't seem to find the answer.

The alternative would be the replace the ballast I guess would anyone know the part number and or an alternative to the factory standard ones.

Cheers

Right. The fogging is most likely caused by the seals on the back covers being gubbed due to age. It sounds like both your lights have suffered seal problems and the resulting condensation has ran down into the bottom of the light where the ballast lives. The ballast will have shorted due to them being positioned in the very bottom of the light unit so they act as a drain (bloody stupid design by Hella). I would advise not using the lights until you can get the moisture cleared as you could blow the other ballast.

If the light that the previous owner has tried to fix isn't too bad you could order some new back covers from Jamie at Sopers for around £22. The ballasts for these lights are quite a common part used on many Hella lights by Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc. The BMW part number is 63126907488. There are lots of them on ebay for around £80. Fitting is a bumper off job but it's not difficult.

You could fit the aftermarket lights. Someone on here recently changed his OEM xenons for a set and they were plug and play. I've never seen anyone get a set of HID ones in right hand drive and obviously the US/Chinese etc ones won't be suitable. TBH mot very many people on here have fitted the after market ones.

Thanks for the advice mate much appreciated!!!!!

I might check the ballasts first and assuming it's that just order the replacement, although the aftermarket ones are awefulll pretttty.

GLWTS by the way

Cheers, still a big part of me hoping I don't sell it to be honest

With regards to checking the ballasts. They are interchangeable so you can take the working one off, fit it on the light that doesn't work and see if it works.

I read a post on here by the headlights master CJ10Jeep that suggested to someone with a similar problem to take the misted light off, carefully rinse the lens out with some distilled water then leave on a radiator for a while to dry out. I'd try this but remove the ballast and ignitor first. I'd then order some new backs, replace the broken ballast and also stick some silica gel pacs on the inside of the voters just to be on the safe side.
