Newbie got a hardtop..

The trouble is my car is silver grey and the top is silver..which I knew when i bought it with the intention to have it sprayed.

Now do I go for Black? possibly easier to sell when time comes or..Silver Grey but risk colour match issues.. (Any pics of either much appreciated)

How much would you expect to pay for the top spraying also?

Cheers, Tim.

Tim,

I think others have had a hard top respray done so a quick search or await a response. I would personally go for a colour match. Get a good body shop and any shade difference should be virtually undetectable particularly as the angles involved where the top sits on the bodywork arounf the boot area are fairly acute and reflected coluors will look slightly diffrerent in any event even if perfectly matched.

sterling grey with matching hardtop

I would certainly get it colour matched. Different colour, unless part of a theme carried on through the car will look like you just got a random top.

You could post some side and rear shots and I'm sure the PS experts will do some trickery to demonstrate looks.

Thanks for the quick replies! I think colour coded maybe the way to go :D hopefully picking it up tonight! Just to clarify..I dont need and fixing kits etc? It should just sit on..job done?

another colour match vote!

don't think about the selling part in the future, but only just what you really want.

Im looking to do the same thing in the same colour as yours at some point so would be interested knowing price etc. Good luck. :)

Any decent bodyshop will be able to get the match spot on. IIRC there are around 7 shades of silver grey. But they will have a chart to get the match perfect

Tim,
Make sure you get the tool used to secure the 3 fixing points. (Looks like an allen key) and also the 2 x fabric coated plastic covers which hide the nasty fixing points next the seatbelt points.

cheers.

Keep it in bright sunlight and no one will know wiser - very nice

PS you taken it a run at speed yet? to check for windnoise?

Yes I did around 80 miles on motorway last night and seems quiet, it has a little rattle though when going over speed bumps coming from directly above the window, anyone else had this?

It might not be a perfect fit and need some adjusting - check out http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=15987&p=233768&hilit=windnoise#p233768

Definately get it resprayed. I did the same thing recently, drove to Leeds from South Wales for it!

Finally had it resprayed (350.00) from a local bodyshop and they've matched it perfectly. They 'mop' it or something once sprayed and it blends very well.

All in all managed to get a hardtop plus colour change for 1300.00 whilst a new one would have 1900.00ish. Plus i just didn't want to pay the dealer so much cash.

I'll post pics on the wknd.

I can't disagree, I drove from SW Scotland to Birmingham to get mine, £700 for the Top, Stand and Cover and just under £250 to get it resprayed.
