Newbie from the UK - current Scirocco owner

Good morning all,

As in the subject - I currently have a Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 TDI that will be 3 years old in a few month so looking for a new car just as good looking for when the agreement ends!

Been looking at a few roadsters and the Z4 is the one that has caught my eye, would be looking at either a factory fresh 2.0 m sport or a 2.8 (depending on what deal BMW would do).

I believe the current Z4 has been out since 2009, but I dont want to splash out on a new vehicle then next year or the one after a new model comes out - is there any plans for a new Z4 and if so when?

Thanks in advance

Well, the LCI (mid-cycle upgrade) was earlier this year, so perhaps 2015 for the launch and 2016 on the road.

That said, if you want a car that's better looking, instead of just "as good looking", then you'll be wanting the previous generation Z4. :poke:

No known plans for a new Z4. LCI has only been around a few months so it could be another couple of years before anything comes along. IF they do another.

That is an interesting prospect.

The E89 is compelling as a (relatively) affordable, luxury GT and it might make sense for them to continue to evolve it in this direction, rather than take on the Cayman/Boxster directly. If they do this, then I'd love to see a Z2 introduced as small, back-to-basics roadster. It amazes me that BMW can produce so many saloons that are nearly perfect, dynamically, but struggle to achieve the same thing with their sports cars.

Ah but therein lies the reason. They know their market for the saloons, execs and familys who want a bit of fun but mostly practicality, style, comfort and efficiency.

They don't know their roadster market as well, they've tried to please all worlds, the people that expect hardcore performance and those that want a stylish but comfortable car. Their design brief for the e89 was to make an e85/e86 'for every day use'. Hence.. compromise. If they'd gone hardcore, they'd have sold very few. If they'd have gone full on comfort, the hardcores would have made a right old racket, including the journos. As it is, they mucked up by not making a single clear path for development.

That said, I'm pleased with my car overall. It has plenty of power, is comfortable and practical as it can be, and still moves and handles as I want it to. Sure its no M, but IMHO it handles better than my e85 did without the horrible suspension my e85 had.

It's a shame. Watching that recent CNET roadsters documentary made me appreciate that they've only ever flirted with greatness when it comes to 2 seater sports cars. Not that I wouldn't give up my left testicle for a 507 or a Z8, of course. :D
