Newbie from the midlands

Recently purchased a 2.2 z4 as a 26th birthday present to myself.

So far - in love with how it looks... not so much with how it drives...

(in comparison to the Astra H I had previous to this)

So, a couple of issues:

- Tramlining quite badly, scariest of all is crossing catseyes to overtake on a motorway and having it suddenly jerk the steering. I read a lot about this being down to runflat tyres so come payday that'll be the first thing to tackle.
(been meaning to jack it up and check if there's any play in the wheels as it feels very similar to when the tie rod ends were worn out on a previous car I had)

- Quite a lot of white smoke from the exhaust when idling - no smell to it, don't know if it being quite cold at the mo would contribute to this at all?

- Roof not fully latching, motor takes it all the way but I have to give it a bit of a push to get it to travel the final inch to lock into the latch.

- Most drives now it'll beep at me and the clock will flash '37+ degrees' it's done this after just having it sit there idling for 5 minutes and just taking off so not even after any spirited driving. Yet the temp gauge is always smack bang in the middle once it's gotten going

- On occasion quite severe juddering as if it's on the verge of stalling just when I'm pulling off in 1st then in second too once it's rolling a bit.
Perhaps this could be an error on my part not revving high enough through the biting point, not being used to the CDV?

Any guidance on any of this would be greatly appreciated, aside from these issues thoroughly in love with the car and have very much enjoyed the drive on perfectly smooth roads

Of course I can't go anywhere without my fluffy co-pilot! :driving:

Hi and welcome Drew.
The first thing to do is ditch the runflats before you consider any suspension work.
The roof issue could be the motor on the way out search roof motor relocation on here, most times the motors can be cleaned and resurrected.
Can't help with the temp issue.
Enjoy your zed they are great motors once you have sorted the small issues .
Good luck

Welcome to the forum from the Midlands as well
Couple of points I get a lot of white steam as well think it's the cold weather
I have kept my run flats I like the harshness on the bumpy roads feels like a proper sports car maybe in the future might change them
Guy in BP station told me if u only do short journeys every third or fourth fill up use the good petrol 97 octane don't use Tesco or asda fuel he said it ticks over better and performance is good
Hope that helps

west midlands any help just ask

Juderring in 1st gear could be air realted. Check around the intake for splts in rubber to maf etc

Hi. Just joined the club, from down south (Hampshire), with my 3.5iS. Had the car just over a year, with no issues. Took it down to Southern Spain, earlier in the year. Fantastic drive on great roads, in the sun! Looking forward to the summer!

I think this is just the low outside temperature warning. Mine does it at 3 deg C. Yours must be set to deg Fahrenheit. I could be wrong. :?

I had this on mine too, not specific always to runflats, could be a mixture of brands and tread sizes too. My tyres were replaced in wear order, or possibly when one was punctured/damaged. This uneven-ness was the prime suspect for my tramlining... basically you should always use good rubber - Vresden, Goodyear, Michellins are frequently mentioned on the forum. Also ensure you always replace in sets, i.e. both rears and both fronts.

- Quite a lot of white smoke from the exhaust when idling - no smell to it, don't know if it being quite cold at the mo would contribute to this at all?

Mine does this too. Old e46 used to do it as well. Everything runs grand, I associate it to being an older car...

- Roof not fully latching, motor takes it all the way but I have to give it a bit of a push to get it to travel the final inch to lock into the latch.

Could be your motor telling you it's on its way out! Very common and best relocated to boot. Because you say it doesnt go the whole way, may be associated with the hydraulic fluid levels being low.

- Most drives now it'll beep at me and the clock will flash '37+ degrees' it's done this after just having it sit there idling for 5 minutes and just taking off so not even after any spirited driving. Yet the temp gauge is always smack bang in the middle once it's gotten going

37 degrees celcius? Unusual and nothing useful to add - sorry!

- On occasion quite severe juddering as if it's on the verge of stalling just when I'm pulling off in 1st then in second too once it's rolling a bit.

Mine does this sometimes but I think this is associated with mine being a SMG and computers "clutch control" at low speeds not being as good as your own....

Welcome to the forum and hope you find the bold useful!

Hello and welcome

Let the spending bug begin lol

These cars can be so frustrating at times but fun to drive :driving:

Nice looking Zed and I'm sure you'll get your issues sorted. I find I had to give more revs to my 1st and second gear as you suggest. Certainly helps with a smoother take off.

A good independent specialist will be helpful to you. . . .sure they'll be some suggestions if needed.

Welcome to the forum.
