Newbie (Car SOS)

[ref]Goshawk01[/ref], yes you did post and I replied, scroll up a little bit.
Then take the time to read the other thread I linked to.

Note down the codes for reference then clear the codes, if they are hard codes (fault still active) the code will not clear and reappear on the next scan. See what the rescan comes back with and report back here so we know what you are faced with and offer advice on the way forward. Your welcome to pay me a visit in Newport and let me scan the car with my Launch Tablet, will be away 31st July to 13th August, planning on attending the Brynmawr Car Show Sunday in the town, will have the Launch Scanner in the boot.

Bit of confusion in the thread I think, possibly due to all this lag on the forum lately. Anyway, he has cleared and rechecked and it does seem he is getting the same codes as I did with that airbag module mess recently.
[ref]colb[/ref], I think the next step is to definitely get you to scan it more deeply. I wouldn't be surprised if you find that it can't see a lot of the modules that sit on the K-Bus.

Brynmawr is on my door step. I was a bit reluctant to drive the car down to Newport just in case I get stuck. But I think I can risk a trip up to Brynmawr on Sunday. I will also scan the codes individually rather than a complete scan to see if I get the same results or if its can not connect.

I cleared all the codes then scanned each module individually. There were 36 to scan. INSTR Instrument Cluster had one Code: 87 K bus.

31 modules had communication errors and could not connect, the rest had no codes.

Pretty sure it’s a module on the Kbus corrupting all those other modules then. Definitely need to talk to Colb

Job one, check all connections under the seats - Done - all look ok.
Job two, removed the centre console to get to the air bag module behind the handbrake. Removed and all looked ok until I unplugged the connections. One looks fine but the other. I'm sure it should not look like this. Not wet as such but very sticky.Photo 2.jpgPhoto1.jpg

Time for a coffee and then start cleaning.

Err, permission to feel smug?
Think you’ve found the problem tbh.
Give the plug a damn good clean out and keep your fingers crossed.
But I just had to splice a complete new plug in as the pins are so small and when they are full of crud it is nigh on impossible to clean it out

I'm not that lucky, its needs a bit more than a clean. One of the pins has rusted away. I think I can rescue the plug, but needs a new socket. To do this properly I need to get hold of a good socket and solder it into the PCB and also replace the plug. Not that difficult but where to get a plug and socket. Alternatively I can 'mad max' it and solder some wires to the PCB at the back of the socket and replace the missing pins with wires push connectors.Photo 3.jpg

Scanned the car to day at Brynmawr Car Show using the Launch Tablet confirmed Code 87 Kbus error and BE Data-filing different to central light module
Couldnt read a lot of the other modules as well which makes me think its a fault down to water ingress on something or down to that sticky dodgy central airbag connector.. Radio is dead although it sometimes comes alive on some random station, No dipped beams or high beams when light switch is operated or stalk used to flash. Tel-tale fdash indicator light not working however indicators do work.
Roof buttons dead as a DODO. Aircon panel working.
Quick underbonnet check and I found the centre scuttle drain was blocked with debris. I wonder if its filled and found its way behind the glovebox fuse and relay board? He is on a mission now to check the front scuttle, clean it out and unblock the drains centre and both ends, explore the fuse board behind the glovebox and the modules that live above it, suspect Body Control module in there might have suffered as well as the central airbag module behind the handbrake. Any suggestions on tracing this KBus error would be welcome.

Ah damn. Have you dismantled it to look inside? You may find the damage has spread too far.
Get the part number off the module and Realoem will give you a list of compatible ones.
Should be able to pick up a replacement secondhand for £50-75.
Then Colb has all the gadgetry required to code VIN, system time etc.
You may want to look for a replacement plug with a length of loom too,

PCB looks ok. Photo 5.jpgTwo pins lost from the Socket and One from the plug, so if I buy a new module I will also need a new plug. Also speaking to https://z4-forum.com/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=32813 Colb. The modules are not plug and play and need to be coded to the vin of the car. I don't have the kit for that. I only have the basic code scanner.

I think I will add two flying wires to see if the faults clear and then decided whether to get a new module and plug

Fair enough, nothing ventured......................
Don't forget though that Colb can do all the coding for you.

Thank you, that's really help full, otherwise I would have been looking for an exact 65-77-6939811.

I have managed to save the Plug, took apart and cleaned each individual pin and also removed the broken pin. As I now have a good plug a replacement module would appear to be the easiest way to go. Where is the best place to buy used parts? There are lots of people on Facebook but I have no idea who is genuine and who is not.

Lottery buying used modules you don't know if they are any good until you got and code them only route available sad to say

Post the part numbers off yours and ask our resident breakers if they have one or the comparable ones mentioned before
