New Z4MR

Hi all,

I've just bought a new Z4MR so thought I would introduce it to the forum and share a few thoughts.

As a few of you know I unfortunately had a crunch in my last Z4MR. After a couple of months messing around with insurance (http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=82244) I eventually got to a place I was happy (enough) with their offer. I bought and sold the salvage to someone on the forum (so hopefully after a few repairs it will reappear on these pages) and then got busy buying a replacement. It didn't take long as I had been keeping an eye on the market in anticipation of resolving my claim.

So, the previous one (http://imgur.com/a/THWif) was a Z4MR Interlagos Blue, and I replaced it with another one. Here is the only pic taken so far:

That's my partner Aarti in the driving seat - she approved :D

WHY THE SAME CAR?
I intended to have the last one a few years and so got 'cut short' with my accident at 15 months. I considered alternatives but after much research concluded that nothing could replace it without a much bigger budget which I don't have (yet). I flirted with the idea of a 35is for a while but ultimately love the things that make the M really special so decided I wanted another one. I considered different colours (grey with cream leather and potentially some CSLs would do it for me) but really love Interlagos Blue. So I ended up happy to get the same again. The new one is slightly higher spec (nothing that crucial but some nice to haves), lower miles (bought at just under 30K) and in fantastic condition.

ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE EXPERIENCE?
Overall it is of course very similar to the last one i.e. incredible

There are two differences that I have noticed since the last M:

1) I am not sure if it just in my head, but everything feels a little tighter/sharper/newer. Little things like the way the indicators click and the condition of the leather.
2) The exhaust. The last one had a H&S which I am keeping but is not yet back in my possession. The H&S was on the last one when I bought it and I have not experienced another M, so I was really intrigued to see how the stock exhaust compared. Naturally everyone has their own tastes, but to be honest, I am a little underwhelmed with the stock. It has a nice 'quality' of sound, but I miss the volume. Less so in the lower revs (sometimes it's nice to have a bit of quiet, and there was a little boom around ~2K revs in 5th/6th), but the volume and tone from the H&S as you really gunned it was part of the 'event' that I got used to with the last M. But still - although I will likely put the H&S back on in the new year (some other options being considered) there is of course no doubting it is a great sounding car with the OEM on it and I wonder how I would feel if I owned them the other way around.

BUYING EXPERIENCE:
I bought from George Mackay in Edinburgh. They were great to work with, service was excellent, and they appear to take time purchase great examples and then getting the most out of them before they sell. Hopefully I will feel the same in a few months.

I spent an hour or two in their garage checking out a few of the other cars. They had a few BMWs, Boxters and 911s but it was a white R8 V10 Plus which caught my eye. They kindly agreed to start it up and give it a few revs - my god it sounded great. Aarti also spotted a GT40 replica they were working on!

WHAT'S NEXT?
Aside from the H&S I am also considering the Eventuri intake. We'll see. Otherwise I don't think I will do anything else, and I will be holding on to all the OEM parts.
Otherwise the plans are to get some fantastic drives planned for 2016. I am hoping to get a week or two in Scotland, a few weeks around Europe, and some time to join some of the forum meets

For now I will be getting a few winter drives in before the end of the year :driving:

Good luck with your new ///M and nice to hear you intend to add some miles to your low mileage example - impressive

Cheers! I'm aware the lower miles are the most expensive to 'lose', financially, but I love the way these cars feel and want to enjoy it :driving:

Nice work & nice read :) happy days now await :driving:

Thanks! As you'll have read I love the colour combo and wheels you have - great car

How are the custom BCS boxes?

Love em , they make the car sound like it always should have without being lairy
Would be the first addition if i ever purchased another ZM as like you i was pretty underwhelmed with stock box noise :( although it does leave you to concentrate on the sounds from the mechanical magic at the front end

Lovley Zed. Great to here you found such a cracking replacement. Now get driving. :driving:

Congrats on getting back 'on your feet' so soon after the last one. Interlagos blue with black interior - no wonder you chose it (again) - it's a beauty  . Enjoy the new ride.

buzyg, enzed4 and beedub - cheers!

paddy wright and harvard - wish it was my garage! This was George Mackay's. They had an underground floor with space for about 10-15 cars and apparently another site with room for another 35. All were desirable, well kept cars. They had a good setup going for sure!

srhutch - thanks! The hardtop is not on yet. I am in Cheshire over the next week seeing family and hoping I will get a run around the Evo Triangle in with the roof down. Love those chilly winter drives! But will probably put the roof on come January to keep it protected through the worst of the winter months.

Yorkie Z - indeed!!!

I haven't actually visited George Mackay's premises but looks like a proper set-up with the right attitude for enthusiasts.......they obviously care about repeat business, kinda rare in my experience.Out of curiousity what made you deal with them....did they have the car in stock or did they source it for you???
I thought at first you were based in Scotland but then noticed it's London....only a short flight but a long day out to drive back.
I was interested in a TTS coupe they had in stock about a year ago but wasn't convinced about the interior colour and ultimately decided on a convertible again.....hence the Z4 we have now.But I wouldn't hesitate to deal with them in the future as their stock looks to be well chosen and interesting.Anybody else had dealings with them and care to comment?
New car looks superb BTW......enjoy!!

Hi Highlander,

The short version is they had the car in stock and it matched up with what I was looking for.

The longer version is that the price was fairly high but 1) it was a top spec car in great condition and came with a new MOT and their own all inclusive warranty so I was happy to stretch the budget a bit, 2) after quite a few chats with them I built up enough trust / wasn't too worried they were taking me for a ride, 3) I negotiated to a place I was happy with. So took the plunge :driving:

I was looking at a 48K example with lower spec; it wasn't my preferred vehicle but was of course cheaper so I considered it - but the guys selling it only replied once and without the details I was asking for, despite me chasing and saying I was in a position to buy! They are either way too busy or a bunch of muppets, either way silly to lose out on a good lead

Anyway, I want to see how the car holds up but so far it's great so pending it all continuing to go well I would recommend GM to others. It is a family run business and they were a nice bunch to meet. George himself picked us up from the Airport which was nice. His two sons now run it and it seems one is a good buyer (picks interesting cars) and the other a good seller (picks the right people). Their claimed client list, a floor full of stunning looking cars, and the GT40 replica added further credibility that they knew what they were doing.

And yep it was a bit of a trip, but happy to do it for the right car, I had air miles to burn and my partner Aarti was up for it so we made it into a weekend and stopped a night in Newcastle on the way back to see her sister. Mainly motorways after that but a good way to ensure everything was working as it should

Hope that helps? And I think many on here would agree with the Z4 over the TTS - but then we would wouldn't we

I've just had a look at the pics on Mackay's website - what a great example of a Z4M - looks like new inside and out. Can't be more than a handful in that condition, surely? Although they do tend to be the recipients of much love from their owners so maybe it's not that unusual.
Looks like a bonus car cover as well - good score.

Cheers enzed4! I also have a matching hardtop at home and H&S soon to be in the post from my last car. So a good set overall I think. Maybe needs an Eventuri to finish it off

Totally agree... no many left like this no, very few infact. Love the colour and you did the right thing getting one like this, probably not much opportunity to do so again , keep it, love it and enjoy it, it will easily hold your money and may even make you some.

how much was it if you don't mind me asking?

Congrats on getting back into a Z4M, JT. It's a special car, that's for sure. A few months ago, I also bought an IB Z4M with 30K. It looks exactly like yours except they put your steeling wheel on the wrong side (I'm from the US). :-) I'm definitely going for the Eventuri, as well. Have you seen it in blue? It's awesome!
