New Z4MC - where to start??

I've just swapped my 911 Targa (a 2002 996) for a lovely Z4M Coupe in Interlagos with Champagne interior. Still learning how to drive it as very different to the 911 but not too far a TVR Chimaera from a few years back. Anyway, loads of questions and apologies in advance if they are all "well trodden paths" already...

Car is completely standard at present but things I'm thinking about include fruitier exhaust, lowered springs, CSL style alloys, strut brace... etc. Coming from a 911 there were masses of suppliers for everything you could think of so not used to the relative rarity of stuff out there.

You guys have no doubt already put your money where your mouth on a lot of these... where would you start and what should I avoid?

Welcome - so how does the M compare to the targa- I've always fancied one - if the targa was better let us know - most of us can take it .

CSLs are a great start on a Coupe

The Targa was a lovely thing and the 3.6 engine is a fantastic unit... fast but full of character and a unique noise. Not loud enough with the standard system on but unique all the same. However the interior was a little drab and frankly dated and if you weren't on a open road were you could spank it you could easily imagine you were driving a Golf!

Far more sense of occasion in the Z4M despite the lack of the premium badge

Hi and welcome along, plenty of advice on here, depends how far you want to mod, Carbon Fibre Airbox, see Woots, lowering, suspension up to supercharging see Exodus and Beedub, full of knowledge, and graphs generally :D

There are aftermarket exhausts from Remus, Eismann, Diablo, Hayward and Scott iirc or you could do a simple back box bypass like many of us have done.

Ge some pics up when you can

Welcome T66RGA,

For me, the starting point was the suspension. If you want to spend lots of time on track, then go KW Clubsport (come with front Camber/caster plates), otherwise there's KWV3, AC Schnitzer Racing (which I have) or BilsteinPSS10, which are all adjustable. Rear Trailing Arm Bush Limiter kit to tighten the back end, H&R M3 CSL ARBs to further reduce lateral bodyroll, wheel spacers to increase track width (and improve the looks). Whether you change the suspension or not, you can improve the handling by reducing toe angles to zero and reduce rear camber.

Then you can mod the air-intake and silencers to increase performance and sound. I'll leave it to others to chip in with all their cosmetic mods.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the responses guys...

So to pick a few of these things out that sound like a good start. Back box bypass - I know a little about this as it was a common mod on 911's but where/ who could do it for me on my car? Is it a specialist job or require special parts. Ideally is there somewhere near me that does it? I'm the Staffordshire/ Cheshire border by the way. Wheel spacers - sounds quick and easy, what mm have people tried and would the car have to set up again after fitment?

Will put some pics on soon but I want to get it properly clean and presentable first

Here's the thread to the back box bypass, any competent garage will be able to do this for you, my local guy charged £90 to do the job, pipes were from Warren Engineering and were about £25 iirc, lovely sound, pops on the overrun and no droning either, simples

Excellent thanks. Just emailed Warren Engineering. If they can supply them I know I mechanic who is a very competent welder :)

I would start with a strut brace and you should notice the difference straightaway. The oem brace is a good choice but there are many others.

I think CSLs are well overdone by everyone so perhaps look at something different to make your car stand out.
As others have said, you then have suspension, brakes and forced induction kits. All readily available.

Welcome  a good detail and pics is always a good start

+1 on hearing about the targa, how was the retractable glass roof experience

The targa roof was great and not far off a convertible feel when fully open on this sunny days. Downside is it squeaked and rattled a fair bit all your round. One of those things that doesn't bother you at first but then grates over time.
Certainly wouldn't discourage anyone from getting one just make sure its working smoothly as costs a fortune if it needs any work

On replacing the springs, Eibach probably, should I expect a noticeably harder ride?

I've a set of eibachs but yet to go on...
Exdos is your spring rates man, but iirc from another thread, although lower ride, the springs are slightly stiffer at rear and softer at front, to give a more balanced less divey under accell/braking. But to counter the stiff ride I've gone for 18s and will go for oem sidewall pss.

I think there's a few others that have gone down this route...
