Hi all,

Just saying ‘ello before I start delving through all of the info on the forum!

2007 3.0si Zed in Montego Blue, which I have been enjoying hugely until my power steering failed a few days ago :(

Looking forward to getting it back on the road, just need to swallow the impending garage bill

Thanks

Josh

Welcome to the forum and well done for posting a picture. That is a must.

When you say power steering, what exactly was the issue? People on here might be able to help out and also advise if the garage is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

Hi and welcome - got one just the same sat outside

Did you search the forum about the power steering - there are a couple of know problems that are DIY fixes

Welcome. Power steering issues on the Si are quite rare... be interested to know what your garage diagnose. What were the symptoms?

Welcome OP - Montego Blue looks great (but I'm biased).

I hope you get your car back soon, and without a big bill.

The garage (Forza) have diagnosed the problem as fault code 611C - Steering torque angle. So far i've had a quote of £895+VAT/ fitting/delivery for a reconditioned unit from Power-steering Services. I'm currently shopping around to try and find any cheaper alternatives.

Other than buying a recon unit or refurbishing mine at a similar cost, I haven't seen any other options for a fix, but would be really grateful of any ideas!

There is a fix for the torque sensor (possible that the wires break off) which is all detailed here... https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=82880&hilit=torque+sensor

..it is a full strip down however so fairly involved.

Here is another post with good pics on removing the column https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=100725&hilit=steering+issues+solved

So are they saying it is the torque sensor, or the angle sensor? They are different things, the latter being a lot cheaper, and easier to fix/replace..

611C is the torque sensor unfortunately. I would have tried a quick calibration of the steering angle sensor in INPA first but unlikely to fix a 611C problem I suspect.

Thanks for the response.

Sorry to pick your brains further, but I have found a second hand steering column, but it is from an automatic. The breaker has suggested that this may cause an issue, however, do you know if this will cause any issues? I’ll obviously be making sure the part numbers match up etc. anyway before buying.

Thanks

Can't see the auto making any difference. One thing you should be aware of though is that any rack from a breakers should have a locking pin fitted (see item 7). I guess just a piece of wire will do but the problem otherwise is that the column can be spun freely which winds up the torque sensor and.. you guessed it... breaks the wire! It might not even be apparent when you fit the rack - the problem will come as you approach full steering lock. I would ask to see a picture of the rack first...no clip...no sale.
