New Z4 side by side with old Z4

On my journey to work today I saw a new Z4 on the motorway, so I pulled into the outside lane to sit behind it for a closer look. I know this has already been mentioned but when you see one in the flesh you realise just how much bigger it is. The funny thing was another Z4 pulled up alongside the new Z4 in front of me so i could see a real comparison of old vs new in front of me, here's my thoughts:

The new one was alot bigger, looked more expensive and had nice detailing but the overall shape didn't seem as cohesive and striking. from the back the quality of the lights look nice but the overall shape wasn't as nice as the old Z4, I think if they had gone for a similar shaped light cluster to the old one but made the quality and detailing nicer it would look alot better. The shape of the boot and wheel arches again looked overly big and overweight compared to the old Z4.

To sum up it looks a quality product (more so than the old Z4) but the shape has been softened and therefore less memorable and distinctive than before. Take away the badge and you my think from the back it was a Merc.
 
Why is it that new models of cars generally increase in size - Mini, CLK, Audi TT, Z4 etc. Do designers think bigger is better? I agree with MS - I like the shape of the 'old' Z4.
 
i know what you mean, in the carpark where i work there has been a new black z4 parked here all week and for some reason, it just doesnt stand out from the rest of the cars.

I have to admit it is growing on me (very, very slowly), especially after seeing the pictures of 'breakers' but it looks too much of a comfy cruiser to me, looks to rival the SLK rather than boxster too much..

the interior is beautiful though...!

I agree the interior is much more classy, hence the higher price tag. I just think if they had made it only slightly bigger and kept the harder edges of the original shape but just improved the quality of the car it would have made a better sportscar.

safety + need for more room + the car has hardtop that needs storage space. And may be the car should be able to accommodate larger individuals in key markets, not just those under 6.2.
 
Have to agree pass a new Z4 in White with red leather every day and looks nice really like the more aggressive front end but the back end just lets it down unlike the old Z4 rear end french fry tail lights looks so much more aggressive and muscular.

The interior still not got me it is smart and the seats seem more comfy just prefer the more simple black/ally of mine and cannot get used to the empty space behind seats not as cosy.
 
Z4 gets bigger and heavier, leaves room for a Z2 :) Lighter, cheaper and maybe a little more driver focused?
 
if rumours and sketches on Z2 are anywhere near truth, that's gotta be an awesome little car to have. will be expensive as hell though, don't count on it being cheap. Cheap and BMW usually dont go together.
